"I am going to be investing in an Apple MacBook Pro in the next two weeks, but what I have seen at work with the new processors coming out (Core i7 is not new and we are at least 3 generations ahead, I have signed an NDA so cant really spill what I know but wish I could) I really don't know what to do because when you buy a PC you know it will be obsolete in the next 3 weeks and there cheap, but with a Mac its more of an investment as you are paying a lot of money for them.

I am going with the 17" which is one generation back as I don't like the look of the new one and I will be waiting until after the MacWorld Expo to see what's coming out but that will only be for the next year and after that I could be out of date and £1800 down

I know Macs out perform PC's as my old 1.33Ghz Powerbook wiped the floor with my higher spec NX9010 2.66Ghz HP Laptop and ran games faster in Virtual PC6 than the HP ran them natively. But the next 17" MacBook Pro is going to be even faster.

My prodicament can only go down the Mac path as I will not under any cercamstances have another Windows machine again as I cant stand Windows, every one of my Win machines had the OS go corrupt or just get so infected with old programs and crap I would get to the point where i had to flatten it or it just popped and I would loose ££££'s worth of programs and data, and after my 5th laptop has gone buts i cant take Windows anymore.

The last Mac I had just worked, never slowed down and did what it said on the tin plus it looked so much better than any Windows laptop out there.

But how long do I wait? get one now and in 3 months they put Blue Ray and Core i7's in them with SSD's as standard would mean I would kill someone.

Why is life so hard? Why cant I have an agreement where they are banned from issuing a new model untill mine has out lived itself "

My only experience of macs left me a bit cold after a guy at work kept telling me how much better it was than todays pc's. What a load of balls that turned out to be. I couldn't believe how slow it was compared to my pc and although this was some time ago, I would rather have something I can upgrade whenever I want so on that note, I am saying, forget the mac, forget your bad history of windows and build yoruself a pc. Having said all that however, I have just realised you were talking about mclaptops so I will stfu and get back to my mcsmirnoff ice and candy mcfloss maker. May the force be with you!

"I find that hard to hear as you have tested 1 pc against 1 Mac and you are basing Macs being crap on this! Tut Tut

I spent a large amount of my working life in the Config centre where we had customers spending up and over £10K on a PC (we used to fight each other to build them instead of installing 100 copies of Office all day ](*,) ). On one occasion we had a customer pay just over £11K and we benchmarked this against a Mac Pro, needless to say the Mac walked all over it with a serious margin and had expansion room still left inside it. Making all of us ask why he wanted it (turns out he had Windows only software :-s )

It all depends what Mac you got to play with and against what PC, the G5, G4’s were ok but nothing like today’s Mac Pro’s. I don’t care how good a PC is, Its not going to run faster than a Mac Pro as it can run Dual 3.2Ghz Quad-Core Processors with 24MB Cache (12MB Per Processor) & 1600MHz FSB, 32GB of Ram, up to four ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT cards    , Support for up to eight 30-inch displays, upto 4x 1TB SATA or 300GB SAS in RAID-0, all for less than a Ailenware PC of lesser spec and much faster to boot.

My old Powerbook was 1.33Ghz, 2GB, 60GB HDD and a 128MB Radeon, My HP was a 2.66Ghz, 2GB, 40GB and a 128MB Radeon and the Mac wiped the floor with it on every angle (It played Tribes 2 Virtualised using Virtual PC6 faster than the HP ran it natively!!!), and with what Margin? Well my current laptop is a Toshiba with 1.6Ghz Centrino Duo, 4GB Ram, 60GB HDD and a 256MB Radeon x1400 and the Mac had (Past sense as I dropped it  ](*,) :? ) higher frame rate in UT2K4, Quake 3, and a few other games, It ran Photoshop MUCH faster and when I plugged anything into it, it just worked without the thousands of hours of configuration required to get a printer working. Now think how fast Dual 2.5Ghz Cores and a 512MB Graphics card will be compared

That’s beside the point as I don’t want a PC as I need a notebook as I want the freedom to go where I want round the house, I have a 3TB “Movie” NAS Drive in the Cinema room and this is also to run that so with the flexibility I also need HDMI (Through DVI Adapter) and Optical Audio to plug into the AV Receiver and the MacBook Pro has them along with a very high spec to boot. The only way you will get a notebook faster than a MacBook Pro is to go Dell XPS (I think that’s what it is) or Alienware and both run Windows which I don’t want, both are ugly plastic boxes (Nice Alien face on one but the Apple logo is better IMHO, its got more features, and a better OS.

I’m no fanboy (I know I come across that way) but I do like Mac’s and unlike the vast majority of people who give there 2p’s worth on how $hit Mac’s are I have not only owned one, but use one on a regular basis, built, benchmarked, tested and compared them to other items of hardware and I know their not $hit and far from it."

having said all that. i much prefer windows and it only gets infected and bogs down if you let it. simple as.

"To a degree this comment is correct, I have not had an infection for a long while as I do know what I am doing 8-

ng with them including £££'s worth of iTunes(this one I am using now has pop ups every 20 seconds with “Corrupt this, Corrupt that” it takes me 50 clicks of a blank pop up window before I can use it then put up with another pop up that appears in the middle of the screen every 2 minutes, I tried running “Check Disk” but that’s also corrupt and freezes after a few minutes so its got to go. The earlier units I had also had family members using them and clicking on all sorts of stuff which infected them and as very few if nobody used “Statefull Packet Inspection” they just click the link and download what’s at the end of it and once its on its very hard to get it off.

Not only this I am sick of the security bugs everyone finds and exploits, Explorers shocking speed (Use Safari and see what I mean) the plug and play bo11ocks that requires 9 hours of installation to get anything working and to be honest I fancy a change from it. Don't get me wrong it’s an amazing bit of software but its just not as nice or easy to use as OSX"

I'm using an i7 right now, and trust me: It's ridiculously fast. Definitely wait for the new MBPs as they'll be a huge step up.

I never said Core i7 wasn’t fast as I am sure they are and I hope the MacWorld Expo they announce it to be fitted to the MacBook pro (But please don’t put those awful black keys on the 17” PLEASE!!!), but if only I could spill with what I know about the next-next-next Gen processors it would make you very itchy to get your hands on one. There is a certain Server manufacturer and I have been show the roadmap for these and lets say if the latest generation is G(a) then the G(b)’s are in production now, G(c)’s have been designed and proto’s built and the G(d)’s are being designed now (the G(d)’s are planned 2011!!!, each generation has a more advanced processor than the last, the consumer is getting 3/4 year old technology that we consider new, Which it is in terms of its release to the public but not in its roadmap. (Don't you just hate NDA’s)

I want a Mac 10 times more than a new Windows box, and only have 10 days to wait, but ill be very cut up if they release something better a few months after as a Mac is a 3 year investment and being a laptop there is no upgrade going to happen. I don’t know, do I really need the “Very” latest spec? Maybe I know its there and think I need it even though I probably don’t…

hehe ya.

What does it for me tho is the arrogance of m$ to associate pc=windows.

Whats wrong with that? 98% of people who think pc will say windows. Just like when you say fast food, they'll think of mcdonalds.

maybe because it dominates a massive amount of the market...and they did revolutionize the pc by being the fist widely used O.S....If i'm honest whilst your point is a valid one, microsoft in my opinion do deserve to be mainly associated with the PC

o dear, he's been in IT for years and he has 1 or 2 windows pc go wrong every day. Perhaps he should learn a little more on the network management side of things. I look after around 1000 pc's and dont get that many going wrong and i'd admit im not even a senior!

once you go mac, you never go back :)

(typed from a pc ironically)

if i could afford a mac i'd have one, i have a now slightly dated mbp (one of the first with intel) and it's never let me down :)

i'm a bit of a fanboy but I'm not gonna rant on as it's pointless, I'm a designer so it's my choice, still love my pc, i mean if i could buy a mac and then watercool it how i have my pc, for the same price, i'm sold...

but meh, i'd have a mac laptop over any other though, nothing comes close on the design side of things tbh...

just my perogative (sp?)

i can see this thread turning into a bit of a war... *waves a mod over to keep watch*
