Z97 v Z87 - any performance advantage?

Just wondered if Z97 chipsets were any faster than Z87 ones? I could upgrade for not much £. I don't need any of the new features. Any input welcome.

If you don't need any of the features then no. Both can run the same CPUs (although z87 might need a bios upgrade for Haswell refresh and up to work) so there isn't really a performance difference either.

The only thing you would be getting is a slightly different looking motherboard with M.2 on some.

Stick with Z87 until Intel release something actually worth buying.

Z87 will definitely need a BIOS upgrade to run any of the Haswell processors. I made this mistake when I bought my 4690k and a Z87 motherboard and couldn't boot. I swiftly returned the Z87 and spend the extra $ for the Z97 simply so I didn't have to RMA the motherboard for an update. As far as performance, not really. The Z97 really just added the chipsets for Haswell processors. So unless you just don't want to mess with updating the BIOS, I would stick with a Z87 IMO.

True that but you can still get boned by a z97 mobo to as i found out last week my Gigabyte Z97P-D3 wouldn't boot with a 4690 (devil's canyon) i had to borrow a older pentium to update the bios...sligtly anoying

Yousers yea that is a strange one. The z97 were supposed to include support for Devils canyon as well.
