z87 + devil's canyon?

i'm currently building a new pc as my ancient dell latitude d505 is getting a bit outdated. i've already got most of the parts, including the new i7-4790k which i want to oc the hell out of. i still can't really decide on which motherboard to get but as i'm going for a black/white theme i thought about the last generation z87 sabertooth from asus. now my question: will i be able to overclock the same way as i would if i bought an z97 board? i actually don't need the m.2 or sata-e support and i just don't really like the looks of the z97 boards..

There is not really much of a difference. Maybe there are some SLIGHT improvements, but none you will really notice I dont think.

Literally the only difference between Z87 and Z97 are Sata Express and M.2.

My brother has a 4790K on a Sabertooth Z87 overclocked to 4.60GHZ, He's also tried it in the Z97 Sabertooth and got the exact same clock.

I forget which motherboard it is but on one of the mid to higher end Z97 boards underneath the heatsink around the CPU socket it actually says Z87 Revision 2.

Hope that helps :)

I was just about to post an almost identical question. I'm about to buy a i7 4790k to replace my old i5 2400 and only have about £90for a new mobo.

Was initially going to get a MSI Z97 Gaming 3 at about £90, but just spotted a MSI Z87 Gaming G45 on sale for £70. This thread seems to answer my question as to whether I should go for the newer Z97 board or the cheaper, Z87 board.

Given they are so similar the Z87 Gaming G45 would seem like a much better choice I think.
