hi, first time poster but love the OC3D youtube channel and TTL, hope to get some expertise from you guys, i have a PC and i am thinking of getting another gtx 760 to go with the asus vg248qe i am getting for myself, the setup i have now is
i5 4670k
msi z87m gaming
8gb dominator pro
gtx 760 mini
2 ssds
coolermaster silent pro m2 520 watts
3 120 corsair sp120
i have checked around and what i figure is that the components will draw 478 @ 100% load watts and the PSU is 520, and it is a single rail 12v so my question is am i an idiot for even trying this with just 40watts of headroom?
will it even start? will i kill the PSU/components?
i am really not in the mood for taking the psu out and redoing all the cabling,so i would prefer if i could avoid it if at all possible, and nothing is or will be overclocked in my rigg.

hope to get some pointers from you guys, thanks in advance

hi guys thanks for the quick replay but i said i was thinking of getting another so the thing is i want SLI gtx 760s on the 520w hence my insecurity :-) thanks for the videotip, i watched that before coming here, so i feel better abnout my PSU but still a little unsure

:-)

A 520 watt power supply is enough for pretty much any single GPU configuration. Youll be fine.

:D i thought that when buying the first one, but now i want sli gtx 760s, so thats why i am bothered

If your going SLI a 520 will not cut it, You will need something along the lines of a 650w if your going that route as a 760 at load consumes 160watts -

Well a 520 could still handle a pair of GTX760's but I agree it wouldnt be ideal. A pair of GTX770's draw 529 at the wall under Furmark so that would still be under a 520's capacity albeit at redline.

If OP was looking to buy a new power supply, Id recommend something in the 650 to 750 watt range as thats about the sweet spot.

Then you should probably just buy a new one then. Those Silent Pro's arent the best around anyway and if you think you might be adding a 2nd card among other things, it would be worth it to just cough up the extra cash and get you a quality 650 or 750.

Im using a 750 because I was rolling a 5870 and overclocked Thuban when I bought it and like to keep in the 40-60% range (plus us AMD overclockers need about a 100 extra watts than you Intel blokes :D ). Im about to retire it because its 4+ years old and I want to buy a new toy and Ill probably end up in the 750 range again because almost none of the top tier PSU's are below 750. The AX760i is what Ill probably land on because I really want to play with the Corsair Link software.

Definitely a 650w to be on the safe side, You wouldn't want your PSU going pop and taking out your system.
Anything higher would just be good headroom for future upgrades.

Agree with the others,a 650w would be good if you want to sli(it gives you a bit of headroom to be safe)

thanks thats where i went :D just wanted to confirm howq much headroom i needed. i will be going for the 650w that people seem to think is enough, corsair link seems to be the thing these days :-)

thank you all for your help

kind regard björn

I've heard mixed things about the Corsair Link and how useful it really is but I think it will be a really cool toy to play with and that's basically all I want it for lol. The main thing I'm after is to see the actual draw I'm using with my rig. Those KillAWatt meters measure draw from the socket but that's not the actual draw on your PSU and I think it would be cool to see the actual measurements. Plus it'll make my PC that much cooler and we all know chicks love guys with really cool PC's amirite.

It will be great especially if you get more powerful GPU's in the future :)

I know it's been answered but yeah, a 520W PSU will power your system just fine (I have a very similar spec'd rig 4670k and GTX 780 etc. and that runs all OC'd with a 550W PSU and only draws 500W from the wall (Will be upgrading PSU soone :P ))

If you can find a good price on it it should be fine. I believe it's a CWT built unit so it should be solid. See if you can find the EVGA Supernova 750 G2 in your area. They run about the same price and are built on the far superior Superflower Leadex platform. May be the best PSU on the marker dollar for dollar.
