I don't know if anyone else has posted this, (had a search in this forum and didnt see it) but there is a pre release version of SP3.

I'm not gonna use it until its stable. Although, being a cynic i think windows will put loads of bugs in to try to force you to move to vista.

Isn't SP3 just an accumulation of all the little updates released since SP2, all bundled into one?

Tis what i heard. How much truth to this there is however, i cannot say.

Well at the moment yes...but the amount of people saying dx10 isnt really different at all - i can see MS losing this as a selling point for vista and eventually giving it to XP users

I doubt that. There are lots of people that say there is no real gain over DX9, but with the way Nvidia and ATI advertise their new DX10 cards and such, the majority of the market still wants it.
 
Ive installed this beta and at the moment once my ram usage goes up, it doesnt go back down. Right now i am using 92% of my 2gb of ram! ive only got firefox, msn, winamp, xfire, vent and mirc open. In the processes runnig 'svchost - SYSTEM' is using up 1,260,388k! If i end the process then my ram usage drops down to 21% (normally 32%) and some of my keyboard (G15) functions dont work e.g. volume. I have tired reinstalling my keyboard driver but that didnt work. Has anyone got any ideas?

although you clearly have something not right there. There's usually alot of process's under svchost, either of those could be causing a problem.
 
It is a nice tool, right its the svchost.exe:1080 that deals with a hell of a lot thats hoggin my ram. I guess that im going to have to wait for the full release of SP3, or any updates.
 
Ive just benched my pc after installing SP3 and beta creative drivers and it has given me a boost in the CSS stress test 155fps - 170fps (max everything, 1280x1024) and in 3DMARK06 9508 - 9852 (default). Just a heads up for other people, and I still get my ram problem :(
 
I have found out that im not the only person with the ram problem, so ive uninstalled SP3. Just a heads up to others thinking about installing it.
 
really strange, what build were you running?

I've just done another clean install of XP 32, and the recent v.3282 build of SP3

So far no problems at all
 
It's looking to me that the extra Vista style features in SP3 at a RAM cost, even when they fix the glitch in the beta version. MS wouldn't use SP3 to make XP as 'efficient' with RAM as Vista .... would they?
