Xeon E5-2690

Hi guys,

I am getting a dual socket motherboard and going to use two Xeon E5-2690s in it.

Being in Australia I have yet been unable to find someone who stocks these processors with the default Intel heat-sink as well (all so far say 'no heat-sink included).

So I was hoping you guys can tell me what may be some of the best options for a heat-sink for the two CPUs? (Ones that would also not be very noisy, I know that's dependent on the fans with the heat-sink too.)

FYI - Motherboard will most likely be the SR-X or the ASUS version.

(P.S. - I did manage to find this http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/info/SYN-RTS2011AC/1945/ which I believe is the Intel stock cooler sold separately, anyway look forward to your suggestions).

If you absolutely must have the stock Intel cooler, it is much cheaper from PCCG: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=207_23_1300&products_id=19028

and if you can afford it, I'd honestly go with one of the Noctuas, yes they are a fair bit more than the stock Intel coolers are, but they are damn near silent and shouldn't cause you any heat issues.

Are you running this in a rack or a case, the mention of the stock Intel coolers leads me to think that there is a possibility it may be in a rack, but I could be wrong.

Hope that helps.

Hi Alfred,

It's going into a case, so height of a cooler is not much of an issue, its more if it will fit next to all the RAM slots of the SR-X.

Any further help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help so far

Hi Dugdiamond,

So the best option is the stock intel coolers? or something else?

2 x H100s ( similar cooling to NH-D14 without the size) or a custom water cooling loop!!! Other than that the only other cooler that is good is the nzxt havik 140 but that might still be too big, I would always recommend a water cooling loop for dual xeons, as it looks better and you'll get better temps!

xeons do not have the ability to be overclocked... so, there will be no need to diffuse any extra heat from the adding of extra volts that would be needed to OC said chip (it simply cannot happen)

stock coolers are designed by the cpu's manufacturer to cope with the demands of any strenuous usages at stock settings (including turbo).

with this said, the stock coolers that come with most retail intel xeon CPUs, will be sufficient AND have been designed to work in close proximaty with others on multiple-CPU mobos.

the only reason they would not work is BAD AIRFLOW through a case/chassis.

xeons are designed with servers in mind... and servers are usually housed in air-con'd rooms. (chilly places to be in)

your dual xeon mobo must be looked after in similar ways, as the bad-boys were not meant for the enthusiast gamer

The sr-x sockets should fit something like the NH-U12P SE2 they seem slightly closer to each other than the SR2 but the SR2 managed a pair of NH-D14's if you wanted them, how ever as the release xeons cant overclock the sr-x is a fairly moot product, the asus Z9PE-D16 i think it is looks to have a slightly bigger gap between the sockets so less chance of issues if you do go with some slightly larger coolers and it also doesnt have a retarded memory layout (4+8)

Also i fixed your post dug

two tower noctuas will not fit on a dual socket mobo very well

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your replies.

I think a number of new issues have emerged:

1. Will a heat-sink technically fit (i.e., LGA2011 socket heat-sinks).

2. Will a heat-sink physically fit that well on the motherboard (or two near each other plus RAM for that matter).

3. Would it be best to use water cooled solutions (like Corsair integrated ones) because Xeons are used to living in cold server rooms.

Further responses are much welcomed.

As a note I am planning on using Corsair Dominator RAM with the top fin things, so we would need to take that into consideration as to if they would fit under the cooler possible, unless someone can suggest better RAM.

Thanks guys.
