Xbox Durango to get 7790?

I should hope the dev kits have an optical drive.

I got my info from pretty much every gaming website on the internet. It's been a long known rumour that M$ want to ditch the optical drive and go always online. Apparently it's to stop the sales of second hand games like they have done on the PC.

Whether it's true or not? well, they haven't come out and said it isn't.

Either way one thing it most certainly won't have will be a blu ray, given that they would probably rather chop off their own penises than go begging to Sony.

Easiest way to stop the sale of games on the 2nd hand market is to simply use a system like Steam and Origin, where the key is locked to your account.

As for the disc drive issue I think it will have a Blu-Ray since Microsoft will have, no choice but to either license the Blu-Ray or develop there own media that will combat the lack of Blu-Ray.

Microsoft has to pay Sony a huge premium just for the blu-ray liscence and on top of that Sony can make them get one slower than theirs simply because it's theirs.. AlienALX: MS has come out and said the console will not always be online. Though i still don't think that will change much with game keys and etc.

Sony could also make it so they cannot use the Quad Layer Blu-Ray disc's, and instead be restricted to the Dual Layer, whilst Sony use the Quad Layer discs.

I thought Blu ray wasn't a Sony only product...

I think the law says that if some one wants to use it then they have to let them (they'll charge for the pleasure mind you...)

Otherwise they would have a complete monopoly on the technology.

may i ask who the f*ck gives a damn about blu ray?

Well for consoles when it's the difference between multiple disks or a single one then I imagine that is preferable to quite a few people, also, the greater capacity allows game developers to include much more in the games.
They're not likely to, given the amount of people who happily pay for DLC even after chucking £50 at a game to begin with, but arguably it could lead to longer single player modes in games, or even just something like higher resolution textures.
Having the "optional install" of high-res/hd/whatever for BF3 on Xbox 360 was just a P.I.T.A, as well as having to change disk if you wanted to swap from single player campaign to multiplayer or vice versa.

on PC it is common to download games, just put a 1TB HDD in those consoles and offer download. and for those people who don't want to download, let them install the games, i remember switching 4 disks in the days when i didn't have a connection, if it's only once they can deal with it.

I myself perfer to have a physical copy of games but the convenience of download is a great alternative. It would make games cost less because they do not have to make millions of copies and save millions in production. It may also shorten the game development time by a month or so because they don't have to make the disc, or keep the same length and make a better polished release game.

Consoles are very much focused on MULTI-media so it has to be versatile for consumers. If people never bought discs then i'm sure it would be dropped.

Yeah I understand that, but this is a discussion about a console not a PC and what a console will or will not have. Given that M$ are going to be trying to compete with PS4's "very large" (tried to find out specifics but that was the only official quote I could find) hdd it's safe to assume you'd be getting 500GB+ anyway.
The argument for downloads replacing physical copies becomes meaningless when you consider that some people don't have an internet connection, or have no intention of connecting their console to the internet. Some people have no interest in anything other than single player and those are the most likely to not care for connecting their console to the internet to download a game.

Then comes the matter of cost. 1 blu-ray disk surely costs less to produce and ship than 3 DVDs due to the raw materials and lower weight.
Download = Game being bought once, Physical copies get lost/damaged etc and then potentially bought again.
I'm sure Micro$haft don't care about developers and studios costs, I'm just trying to think of all sides to the argument.

Either way, I can't see one of the major console manufacturers completely dropping removable media anytime soon, and personally I'd rather blu-ray than DVD if only for the convenience of less faffing around.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that that the PS4 will use 100gb blu-ray disks, while the xbox will use 50gb blu-rays. If i could find it, it would pretty much concrete what you guys are saying about Sony not giving MS full privileges (only letting them use dual-layer).

If that is the case it will more likely Microsoft not wanting to pay the premium for the privilege of it. Understandable.

In any case when are games for the PC going to be needing over 50GB? RII:TW no less shown to need 30GB (at time of typing) volume of space. My only worry with this is later on with this generations lifespan with games being held back in scope and fidelity from its inception due to easier porting between platforms. That is the greatest potential fallout from this [PC platform mainly].

However with the way things are looking for the gaming industry it will become a more digital based distribution market, therefore only limited by the volume of your primary storage device(s).

Most console people will still buy on a disc at the start of the generation so size is a factor. After a few years HDD space becomes a very large issue if games just get bigger and bigger.

I just want PC to be the first in the port chain. I don't want excuses that it's to hard to code for because of the different architectures anymore, all are X86-64 so no reason you should leave the PC crowd behind and lose potential revenue.

you're absolutely right, but microsoft and sony pay a lot of money to keep them titles exclusively to themselves.

Console exclusives don't mean a thing, the only console you could get FFVII on was PS1, yet a PC version was also released (a little later I think).

The Oddworld games, e.g. Abe's Odyssey, Abe's Exoddus, were supposedly to be Playstation exclusive, but were released on Game Boys and Windows and a huge u-turn pulled with Munch's Odyssey by making it an Xbox exclusive launch title.

I'm not sure but I think the Metal Gear Solid series was supposed to be exclusive too at some point.

Of course if anybody knows differently then feel free to correct me and I'll retract anything I've incorrectly stated, going back a fair few years for those examples so it's likely I'm just wrong.

Off-topic, but nice sig btw.
