X58 Hex vs X79 Quad

My question is,

Should I stay with my Gigabyte X58A UD3R and buy a $600 i7 980

or buy a whole new system with an AsRock X79 Extreme4 plus an i7 3820?

The i7 980 is a six core processor

where as the i7 3820 is a quad core processor.

Either will be watercooled

Thanks

I thought the i7 3820 was delayed until feb 2012?

Well, when it does come out it will be less than $400 AUD and more than $300 AUD where as the i7 980 is $600.

I currently have an i7 930 at 4GHz

If I went with the i7 3820 it would be around $340ish for CPU, $285 for AsRock X79 Extreme4 motherboard, $125 for Ripjaws Z quad channel ram, which is all up around $750.

Depends on whether you need those extra cores or not. If you do the 980 would be the way to go but i'd wait for benchmarks before deciding.

You could also grab a 2600k and a GEN 3 Z68 motherboard for the price you would pay for a 980 and the 2600k will perform better.

If the 2600k outperforms the i7 980 then the 3820 will kill it!

I don't know we will have to wait for benches but for the money you would pay for a 980 you can get a 2600k which will be better and you still have enough change left over for a Z68 motherboard.

So if the 3820 isn't as good as the 980, instead of spending all that money on a 980, get a 2600k instead.

Ivy Bridge is going to outperform Sandy Bridge so I might wait for that, but then again, Ivy Bridge-E may be compatible on X79 motherboards, so it is a bit of a toss up.

Can't wait forever though.

This is the Quad Channel memory by the way. MUCH cheaper than I thought it would be;

The way I see it at the moment is if you go for a 2600k with a gen 3 1155 motherboard you can upgrade to Ivy Bridge later on.

If you go with a 980 you have no upgrade options and no PCI-E 3 plus it's more expensive than a 2600k which performs better and you still have enough money after buying one for a gen 3 1155 motherboard.

If you go with a 3820 you have options to upgrade to the high SB-E CPUs and possibly IB-E next year.

The thing with IB-E being compatible with 2011 and X79 though is although it may be compatible i'd put money on Intel releasing a separate chipset for IB-E when it is released.

Just go with what you think would be best for you

Wow that's a lot of information, thank you very much.

I think I might take my chances with X79 and go with the i7 3820. Intel made Ivy Bridge compatable with 1155 so they may do the same with 2011. I am now drawn away from the i7 980, as you said it will leave me with no upgradable options. I also forgot about Gen3.

Thanks again, +rep for you

I personally would stay with your set-up until later 2012 :/

but if you upgrade to the 2600k and keep that until Q4ish 2012 the year wait wont be as painful.

1366 was and still is a very viable socket, but if your wanting all this new gen3 jibba jabba hop on the 1155 until the ivy bridge-E releases.
