looking to upgrade rig in my sig,

keeping the Mushkin 650watt, 8800GTS and my Case, Ultra Aluminus and the DVD drives

im gong to be getting the Thermalright Ultra-120, looked at the P5E but the heatsinks look so large and dont no if it will fit.

Q6600, its cheaper by $100 than the 9450, and G.Skill 2x2GB recomennded by Killagorilla

I want to semi future proof it

wanted a P35 board, but it doesnt support PCI-E 2.0, and i read that the new cards perform better on it

So looked at the X38 boards and the 780i

There all between $220 and $270

Looked at the Abit one which is the Cheapest X38, and the Evga 780i which is $250~

Ideas? COmments?

THanks!

I game only, no DDR3 for me.

Here are the 3 boards in question. Will the Ultra-120 extreme fit?

Well, do you want to run SLi some day, or are you going to switch to ATi-cards for Crossfire if you decide to pump up the graphics? I've always been a fan of ATi in my younger days, but decided to go green after my newest build, and I can't say I regret it. Allthough, running my rig on the 780i chipset (Asus P5N-T Deluxe) I have discovered the chipset is getting mighty hot, which I do not believe is an issue with the X38. But in my case, I'm going to go over to watercooling in the near future, so I'm not actually concerned, and the board is as Asus claims (Rock stable, heart touching) :P

If you're undecided, and have a little extra money on your hands, why not check out the new Asus Striker II Extreme-board, featuring the new 790i-chipset? It's pretty pricey yet, but should drop soon enough. :)

Oh, and by the way, the Thermalright Ultra-120 should fit like a dream on whatever mobo you choose, I guess. I'm using the Tuniq Tower 120, and they're about the same design, and even though there are heatpipes all around the CPU area there's enough room for the cooler. :)

pretty sure that the TRUE fits the IX38 QuadGT no problems.

If you intend to go SLI at some point go 780i, for single cards or Crossfire X38.

I'd go with the X38 really, unless you want to be running SLI.

Out of all the 780 boards we build out of, we have problems getting perhaps 40% of them to work first time with or without an overclock. They are great boards, just a shame it seems they have to be cherry picked, with the exception of the EVGA boards which seem a lot more stable out of the box

The X38s are reliable and fairly trouble free. Plus they work very well with two X2s!
