Work area

After some searching for new desk i got the idea to build my own.

Earlier i had a room as a office, but since i have twins at 3 yrs i want to be closer to them when they play and run around.

I can do some work and see them at the same time.

(i work from home and i do not have any "kindergarten"/daycare for them until after the summer)

So, my idea is to get a little american and use the living room as combined office, play-room etc.

(got a 7 meter model train going along one wall also)

Started this build a while ago but when i noticed this forum for Desk and Work area, so what the heck. I can show it to you guys too

Later on i will add some more furniture as a sofa, maybe a chair and a flat tv on the wall.

But when i started i checked what space i need, and i can buy other furniture to the space left over

Lets roll.

First i decided the width and length.

The three legs are on the "outside" of the desk.

What i have used so far

- 19mm particleboard, 250x90cm

- 3 "Vika Curry" legs from ikea

- 2 "Faktum" wall cabinets from Ikea, 50x70cm

- 2 "Härlig" door, Ikea, 50x70cm

- 4 "Integral" hinges, Ikea also

- Some color, screws and other stuff

To do later

- White soft LED under the table, mood light

- Shelf on top of the desk for the printer

- Shelves to put my computer on

- Cut hole to collect all cables under the desk

- Red fabric, as you can see on theathres, small "curtain" around the desk in the front

- Paint the cabinets under the table dark gray

More to come...

And... sorry for my crappy english, some words i needed to get Google translate to fix

Bad picture, dark outside and i just increased the light in photoshop to see something.

Painting the particleboard after some sanding and cutting of the corners.

Just in the middle of the room while painting.

Painting the wall at the same time (same color) thats why the light pointing strange.

To insure stability for the legs and make some room for the doors on the cabinets to open properly i added this spacer under the desk. The table top is screwed in both the cabinet and the piece that holds the leg so it's crazy stable.

The base is done

I put up a monitor and the laptop so i can do some work. Got one more 24" to add when my custom case is done and the printer is going on a shelf ontop of the desk.

The red color is far darker than the pic shows, almost cherry red.

Using a regular compact camera, and the pics gets shitty due to bad lighting out/inside. Newer updates i will fix pictures daytime

Here is a good picture of the desk. I will hide the sides and the front of the desk with fabric, like this one below.

I´m not sure yet if im going to use dark grey or some kind of red.

Hmm, maybe not a bad idea. Just to paint the white cabinets dark to blend it in more...

I have a cable collector but not using it yet until i get my workstation ready. Behind the monitors i will cut a 40-50mm hole to route the cables below.

Testing to paint the cabinets below, i think i will go with only this and some white led´s as downlights for mood-lightning.

Need to glue the edge/lipping to the particle board too, so i hide the ugly edge.
Going with dull black on the edge, and the cabinets below are painted in dull black too. So the not shine so much.

I dont think you should paint them, they go with the wall area around the windows.

I would have just routed your cables through your collector and then maybe posted it again .. get a few more ideas maybe.

But it is your desk after all, we are just by standers throwing out ideas =)
