Wireless tip/ISP rant

Whilst passing hours on YouTube the other day, I came across this and thought that I'd share it with you guys as it has done wonders for me (see before and after pics)

With that in mind I then thought I'd go here and here to test my connection. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to test the connection before I modded the router but it was around the 12 k mark, same upload more or less. I think the main thing to be noted here is not just the connection speed but also the fact that the test itself only took about 2 seconds.

Now, on to the more important part, the rant. Back in the day when broadband was just coming in to the mainstream, I had originally signed up with a small company called NTL and together with my phone and digital tv package, was on a 512 Kbs connection. Every six months or so, I'd get a call or letter from NTL to tell me that due to their ever growing success, my internet speed was going to double at no extra cost - result ! So this happened pretty much on par for a few more years and with the money that they were making (top flight football sponsership deals) I started to recieve even more appealling calls along the lines of; 'due to our ongoing successs, we would like to offer you more discounts on your current package or we can put the extra cash in to your internet'. This was clearly becoming a good company.

Then (rant), the bad news came, NTL were being bought over by Virgin Media. At first I had no reason to doubt Virgin as I'd never used their train service but then small discrepancies started to appear such as halted or no internet, cut out connections or digital tv not working. Secondly, I also understand that with these quoted speeds of 'up to 20 MB' basically means, 20 is the fastest you'll get if you stay next door to the exchange but it will most likely be around 12. Now I know that these are all problems that can and will happen with any company but it feels like it's happening too much with Virgin and I don't feel like they really care.

So now I think that it's time to shop around, I realize of course that your pretty limited in choice depending on your area but was wondering if anyone could vouch for BT or O2 wireless, doesn't have to be a package deal this time.

p.s When I originally went to write this between 1 and 2 am last night I couldn't connect to OC3D !!!

EDIT working on pics, geting 'not valid image' message.

I don't know which other companies offer cable services (which your on atm), but if you have to go back to phone line broadband, you won't get near 20, probably won't even make 8 depending on your distance to the exchange.

(Sorry if this is obvious).

I've got a Virgin Cable connection at the moment and since nobody can be bothered routing cables all around the house then wireless will have to do. Other than the router occasionally crashing and the possibility of someone trying to hack your network from outside, I don't really have any issues with running a wireless network. It's just Virgin are beginning to Pee me off quite a lot recently.

Luckily I can put my hands up and accept no responsibility for that. I work for virgin adsl, not virgin cable :p

I take it you can't get Virgin in your area ?

Yep, on cable, flawless service from day one. I do deal with cable workers a lot and they are pretty useless lol. Get them transfering so many of their customers through to us for no reason.

Thing is though, there's not a lot of fault finding to do on cable. If the system says its broke, a few clicks and its done. If not its an engineer out lol

stay well clear of bt they ripp u off incorrect billing and and they are throttling the nuts out of me sumtimes late in the night (after 2am!!) i can get speeds of 1000kb for downloads

then in the daytime sometimes i cant get them above 100kbs!!!

bt have billed me £400 since december and that is without cost of calls!!!

will warn you 1 last time dont go there

on another note sky have a deal on 8mb unlimited broadband phoneline and sky (normal package!!) £30 and u can upgrade from sky normal box th o the plus box for £15

if u are already an existin customer you can have it half price for the first 6 months!!

The thing that's been happening with me recently (last 6 moths to a year) is my connection just slows right down to maybe 3MBps. At first I thought it was the router and did all the usual reset stuff but then I went pure cable connection for 1 week and got exactly the same results. I'm on the (up to) 20Mbps line and unless it was 3am, I was am lucky to get 5MBps. The nearest exchange to me is the Baillieston one which is less than 3 miles from where I live ! It's annoying, I don't really want to change from Virgin but may have to.

Checked with them if you are capped? cable cap from 20 to 5 if you download a load within x amount of time

how do you get 1000kb download speed? i didnt think BT were doing a LLU product, meaning the quickest would be 8mb. I could be wrong though. Also which package you on?

@ OP;

pop onto samknows.com and put your details in. Will tell you whats available in your area. Im with bethere.co.uk and its been pretty good.
