Wireless signal boost

I love wireless... Even though I keep everything wired on my desk straight to my router/modem. There are 4 people in my apartment complex that buy a share of my internet connection monthly and they are all running off of my WiFi router and it's very good and speedy, good connection strength too (mmmm, thx to US Robotics :)).

802.11n will be awesome... Is it already available or what is the slated release time for the technology? Also what speed? Sorry getting ready to head out so no time to google and gather my own info :p

Thx!

It's still being ratified/finished which is odd cause they said it was finished last year . It's looking to be 540mb/s theoretical, (in the same way 108/54G is theoretical) which will shape up nicely into a decent speed once overheads and BS are out the way ;), and Netgear's RangeMax 240, which is pre-N (multiple channels of G), was shown to reach a true throughoutput of 100mb/s by THG which is a step in the right direction. The range hasn't been given yet, but judging by the distance that the newer Pre-N kit is doing, it's set to be good. They probably won't get it fully into the shops till like June 2007 at the earliest, which is complete homogay, but it's better to have something that works rather than a d-link ;).

basically everyone has released a pre-n version.

no1 has released a full N standard.

btw, mimo (like the belkin G+ mimo, has better range than its N1 equipment (what some ppl/belkin used to call pre-n)

the range for the mimo stuff is atm "1000ft outdoors" according to the manufacturers, so we are looking about 20-30 meter IRL

Pre-N is mimo. It just means they use multiple channels which aren't bonded (or something like that).

Awesome, thanks for the info mate. Greatly appreciated. Looks like N is going to be where it's at, once its here I might think about switching everything over.

@Dav0s: I charge $10 a month to anyone that wants to get on my net and they get unlimited bandwidth/usage. For this purpose I have my modem set with the 20/2.5 config :)

PRE-N EQUIPMENT WILL NOT WORK WITH RATIFIED N! at least not well.

Yeh, being like a 10th of the speed it's going to age fast. Not only that but N seems set to swamp the spectrum, so it will slow down if not inhibt any neighbouring G/B networks.

When I actualy NEED more that 100mbps ill go up to gigabit ethernet. Wireless maybe all free but i live in a field, nowhere near anything, and my wireless gets interfearance spikes. As does every wireless network ive come accross.

Just the sort of thread that Ive been looking for.

My misses lives over the road and up a bit from her parents and they have an orange live box. She wants to use their connection wirelessly but its just a little too weak to connect to via normal methods (ie. tested on my macbook walking around her house)

Now this is a completly legit situation where I have no idea where to start. Do I get a sweet as usb done, base station and then configure things that way?

Ive a spare DG834 router that I could trial things with. Ive seen things like the Hawking Antenna Dish thats usb and you can point in the direction of a hot spot but im looking for something a little better.

Any suggestions?

I have a dlink wireless router at the moment and wanted to what would be the best way for me to boost my signal downstairs. Is it as simple as getting a second wireless router and then bridging the connection?

get a new aerial ... i have 2 20DB antennae one for each router the avg power is 3db and every 2-3 Db is a doubling in signal range

(my 20 DB antannae have been rated for 1000Meters outdoors .. and i can get my wifi @ my fave coffee shop ~ 100 m away)

Where did you get them from?

one thing ppl must remember:

Correct, it probs wont work well. But as most manufacturers have said, they can pull the pre N stuff inline with the ratified just by a simple firmware upgrade.
