Wireless network cutting out

Hi there,

My wireless network seems to cut out quite often for some reason reacently, this has been for around roughly the past week. This Never happened before, my connection has been pretty damm stable.

I was previously on wanadoo, and now im on IDnet, (IDnet was working fine all this time untill last week so its probably not an isp fault).

My router is a BT Voyager 2100, the network consists of 3 computers, 1 desktop directly ethernet wired to the router, my dell inspiron 6000 laptop, and my sisters sony laptop with a belkin wireless card.

These problems seem to have started after my sister got her belkin wireless card recently (it is the £14.99 one from amazon.co.uk). But the problems still occur even if her computer is not connected to the network.

Basically at some random point durign surfing, the next page to load wont load up, and firefox will say "server not found". or somethign like that.

When i check the router, the adsl signal light is still on, whihc suggests that the router is still connected?

The only way to fix this is usually turnign the router on and off, if this doesnt fix it then have to also take the extra step of using the "repair" function for the wireless adapater, where it just reconects.

My cousin told me to get bt to do a line check, and a cross line check, i dunno what these are.

Anyways, any ideas as to the problem would be appreciated :) thanks guys.

Its probably either the client card, or the router overheating. What happens to the connection on the wired pc when the wireless stops responding?

there are curently BT 8mbit tetss in certain sreas if u r in such an area u may recieve f*kd up net access .. else [as said] router overheating or maybe the new card is using a differnt tranmission scheme (diff RTS etc) ensure they are all tranmitting in the same way .. also try new drivers for the card

there is a number you can ring, which escapes me at the moment sorry (its short) which will give you some line testing options, although i dont think this is the reason for the signal cutting out. With desktops, if the ariel on the router and the ariel on the pci card are at cirtain angles the polarity of the signals cancel eachother out, dunno if this is of any help with laptops :o

User's without the latest XP updates have experienced intermittent wireless outages (this issue was addressed and fixed in one of the XP updates)

Thanks for the replies guys.

Well its highly possible that its the belkin wireless card for my sis's laptop, sicne the problem seems to have started at a similar time she got it.

Also i think its possible that there are line mess ups in my area, iv checked on the Be Unlimited site, and they say that they are supposedly comign to my exchange in Feb 06.

I doubt its the router overheating since i have slightly* raised it from the ground.

If its the belkin card, what could the exact problem be do you think?

THanks

*plus i have updated my laptop to the latest xp updates, the other 2 computers im not sure, also the wired desktop also recieved the cut out at the same time as all the other computers

im guessing that means its a problem with your router, not the wireless signal. also, laptops, in my epxerience, have never seemed as stable over wireless as desktops, dunno why, im guessing something to do with power *shrugs*

It'll still overheat. The fact that it is cutting out for all pcs could signify that it is frying. It mainly depends on whether you are able to ping the router from the wired pc when the net stops working.

Generally laptops will lose signal more as they will 1. be smaller with not as good cooling, and will be likely that the pc card will fry, 2. be moved around more.

if the wireless card uses the RT2500 chipset THE drivers for it are the problem i had such a card on my WIFI network until i actually installed backdated PCI drivers

Hmm i really hope it aint frying i dont wanna fork out for a new router. How will i be able to verify if its the router frying??

Also how will i know if the belkin card is using RT2500 chips?

:)

The card is using a rt2500, but I don't see why it would cause a loss of connection to the wired side. To see if it's overheating or not, see if you can ping the router, when the net goes down.

its a little thing w/ most routers and the rt2500 chips i was havin the same problems until i got a dg834g V1 (V2 dint work) it had the mem / cpu to deal with the packet errors i was gettin errors but the otha comps werent cuttin out ..

now my old drivers allow me to use uninterputed net

get OLD drivers for the RT2500 mine are version 2.2.6.0 [PCI] << the only GOOD 1s

oh and try enabling wireless isolation in the router settings

Ok,

I think I might be getting closer to the problem, now WHEN internet cut out, I tried pinging the router (192.168.1.1) as recomended from my wireless laptop, It pinged fine, no loss at all, I even can connect to its settings page and see everything fine through IE or firefox (this suggests that the router might not be frying?).

I can also ping the IP of the other computers on the network (192.168.1.3 etc..) fine.

If I try to ping for instance www.google.com, it comes with the error "ping request could not find www.google.com please check the name and try again.

Now, whats odd is that at certain times, some sites will work (very few, eg: like google), and when i ping them they will ping fine, but some sites, eg:microsoft, yahoo WONT load, or ping they come up with that message.

This is exactly the same case with the desktop pc (the ping test, connection etc...) although that is directly connected with an ethernet cable to the router.

So why does the problem temporarily get fixed when i reset the router?? maybe its somethign to do with bad sync to the line??

Now although the problem SEEMED to start when we introduced the belkin wifi card in the mix, I now have a feeling it might be a problem with the actual ADSL line itself? or possibly even the ISP (IDnet). What do you think guys?

PS@ Joe, thats for the tip, but this problem doesnt nly affect my sisters laptop with the belkin, it affects all computers, whether or not the belkin is active.

Is there a way you can view the connection status using the web interface? if so you can probably post a screenie of it when the adsl goes down.

Sorry it took so long to get the screenies, whats strange was msn was still connected when the net wouldnt work. Bah!!
