okay here goes

(a proper explaination)

you have a bad dim - you removed it - the 3 remaining dimms will now work as single channel, hence the drop

you replaced the bad dimm - the mobo recognises the 4, even though 1 is bad.... it now runs as dual channel, but at the bad dimm 's performance on the matching pair (good/bad channel)

I think what he means when he says he replaced the bad dimm was that he replaced it with a new dimm therefore there shouldn't be any performance drop
