Windows 8 Develop Preview

Tried it in VirtualBox, and it bombed out before even getting to setup. ("Failed To Start" - 0xc000255)

Will toy with it again later, see if I can get in.

Or am I being a complete n00b?

Edit: It doesn't like IDE virtual drives/controllers, which it set by default. Is loading now.

I have it in virtualbox but I can't install any network drivers.

You also have to enable virtualization in your BIOS if you haven't done already, for anyone that might be having probs getting it to work.

This is just a preview though it's still basically Windows 7 with a Windows 8 make over. We won't get to see what Windows 8 is really like and all it's features until the Betas start rolling out, which hopefully won't be to far away.

has anyone figured out how to close programs?

I have been messing with this all day at work on a 22" touch screen and the only way i could close programs was through task manager.

I think it is a good interface but need a lot of work. It wont be useful in a business environment , it seems more useful as a tablet or a phone interface.

What are you guys thinking?

Same here buddy, good ol' CTRL+ALT+DELETE to the rescue lol.

In my opinion W8 is built for touch devices and nothing else. M$ want a piece of the mobile market...

Its annoying to see people saying is built for touch devices only. Yes..the tile interface will be best utilised on touch PCs and tablets but once the OS is fully released, PC users will be able to completely disable it and it will look almost exactly like Windows but with some nifty new features.

The OS is to succeed Windows 7 as a PC desktop OS and will probably be the OS of the now for 3 years at least, much as windows 7 is/was.

Instead of hating you should really d/load and install it and you will see what I mean....

I quite enjoy 7 so I don't think I'll be spending any time on WIndows 8 dev previews, alphas, or betas. It was a different store when we had Vista, it sucked so bad we were all anxious to jump ship to the latest and greatest, hehe.

FFS people - it's a preview... NOT a full blown working version!!!

it's it meant to be a glimpse of the features it will, or may, have.

Previews are meant to be used as tool to gather feedback. Hence why it is still buggy and has very little driver support.

[edit]

...RCs (release candidates) start rolling out... that's when we will see if it is any good, or not

I think the most important thing you get out of it is where Microsoft is trying to aim at (in terms of the market). I would have liked to have seen the Metro Style apps though.

True. It is an OS suitable for both tablets and desktops, which will save Microsoft (money and time) from creating a separate interfaces for tablets and desktops.
