He guys I've just bought the parts for my first build and now have to pick an OS. If I could have it my way I would run only Linux mint and play games on there. But unfornutaly most games don't have Linux support <_< (C'mon valve). So in order to play the games I want I'm going to deal with that Microsoft thingy we call windows.I don't plan on getting an ultimate version or anything but I will be getting home premium or something to that extent. What I cant decide is wether to buy Win7 or Win8. I can buy windows 8 for about 80 bucks and 7 for 90. And the metro doesn't scare me if i get windows 8 Ill just install a 3rd party start menu.

My question is if windows 8 is good for games. In almost every GAME benchmark windows 8 almost certainly comes behind 7 in fps  . Is this because the drivers still aren't up to par or is it windows 8 itself? I don't have a crazy build so i want the best performance i can get. So what do you guys know is 7 better then 8 when it comes to gaming? I don't care about anything else besides gaming because Mint will be my OS of choice for everything but gaming  . Thanks for the input guys.

TL/DR: Is windows 7 or 8 better for gaming performance?

I have experience with both. Drivers are not yet mature for Windows 8, so for now WIndows 7 will do you just fine.
At the same time.. I do belive Windows 8 is the better system. Not for gaming though... not yet anyway.

Hi I have been using Windows 8 for awhile now and I find it performs really well, it takes up less space on your hard drive, Battlefield 3 plays just the same and Mechwarrior Online has less crashes for me on 8 than it did on 7, most people don't like change and the fact that it has a different UI they instantly don't like it.

Nothing wrong with Windows 8 and gaming at all, I don't know where people are getting this information that it isn't. There are no problems with drivers and as with any new OS/Software it gets better with updates as time goes by.

Not that Windows 8 needs to get any better than it is, it's faster and smoother than 7 with quite a few improvements.

I run Windows 8 Pro x64 btw.

It's faster, I love it, but it didn't work well with my "rig" for whatever reason, I encountered some issues with some games, and changing to Windows 7 fixed that. I do use Windows 8 on my netbook and I am loving it, it's better than Windows 7 for sure. Just din'twork well for me in gaming. I am really sorry about that, and I am thinking of switching to it again.

So you guys think that in the long run windows 8 will develop more when they improve drivers and such? I think I'll go with windows 8 just because it should last me longer and that you guys believe its a better system, which i don't disagree with its for quicker and snappier at doing windows things Just head to head gaming irked me abit but thanks for the info guys. :D

There are no problems with drivers as it is, I haven't come across one single thing that doesn't work on 8.

Windows 8 is the way forward, things from now on will be developed for Windows 8 so you might as well go for 8 for that reason and the fact that it is everything that 7 is and more.

i also use win8pro64

at first there were problems with getting used to it, and that is to be expected with any new 'alien' software/OS.

the same could be said when people upgrade from previous versions the newer ones.

win8 is alot better, especially with start8 installed on it, and a few other tweaks done... http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=49254

I run win7 ultimate x64.

but run a dual boot of w8x64 aswell just to see how its doing and eventually i might switch

but

first time i booted it i couldnt even find my computer, only after 10 minutes i had to go through a window and manually enter address.

Metro tabs are good for consoles, tabelts and androids not for savvy pc users
