When I first saw the headline, I was like 'wtf...they are killing off windows?', but a good article and it makes sense for Microsoft to do this for a few reasons.
It is easier to keep it bang up to date. Adding or removing features.

But this is, in my opinion, a clear indication that all future Microsoft software IS going to be subscription based.

This is an appreciative step from Microsoft. This time they have considered to make the OS to cover all areas of user, developers and all range of devices. So this is a safer bit from Microsoft to have the platform stable and simpler for the user as well as developers....

What they should really do, is allow Windows to be installed on a module basis, like Linux, i literately have no desire for 30GB Windows install, i use no applications included other than Calculater

Official Windows 'Lite'

If they do this, and can pull of seemless updates, then they're onto a winner

Me personally Windows with DirectX thats all i want!

IMO Microsoft will still make OS's but they will not be called Windows they will just come up with a different name.

Also long term they will be able to make it secure and no holes hackers can get into which is never a bad thing

If it becomes subscription based. I'll move to Linux. I don't want to have to pay to use my PC when I already do with electrical bills.

I don't think the OS itself will become subscription based, but I do think they will try to improve the app store and monetize it and will create a subscription which will give you additional features and programs (office and Cloud storage etc).

Who is to say what the future is going to hold, but Microsoft will find a way to monetize it. Let's just hope it is all worth what we have to pay (if anything).

Maybe like apple make the OS free or cheap and introduce an app store iTunes and such to make the money considering they would in theory have a large base to sale to

If it's truly eternal now why not just drop the number and call it 'Windows' seems retarded that it will be 10 forever.

I doubt Windows will become a paid for service as this would have more people moving over to operating systems like Linux which will become a lot more user friendly over the next few years.

Well I read today that it's only free for 7 and 8 users for a year so it could well be subscription based.

You're right and wrong.

It's free for Windows 7/8 users to upgrade for the first year and you will have the license forever.

After that you will have to buy it like any other operating system if you want to upgrade.
