As long as it isn't the abomination that Windows 8 was, I wont mind. As someone who requires the swiftest possible workflow with minimal faffing about, and has absolutely zero interest in current stock prices or the weather in the Upper Volta, Windows 8 was hateful compared to the simplicity and speed of Windows 7.

I'd rather use Windows ME than 8.

Still?

Did you ever try 8.1 and the fixes (namely start is bacK)? Because I've really fallen out of love with 7 since sorting out 8.1. 7 is slow, dated and more resource hungry in comparison. I use it in the traditional start button config like windows 7.

That's pricey. Oh well, bring on the free upgrade!

Might be worth getting a Windows 8.1 license now, so you can use that to upgrade to Win10 for free when it's out.

I agree, my HTPC is on W7 only because of WMC -_- and after I game on my 8.1 machine I go watch or surf on the W7 machine it just feels so different. Almost to the point where I am tired of it... If i could get WMC to work on W8.1 my HTPC, you bet it would be on there. I may not wait till the first year is up to get my free upgrade just depends how bad I want to see all the features of W10.

I am surprised that it said the 31st of august but that could change right?
Once the new skylake processors and W10 is released I will be buying a new laptop for my girl and see how we like it.

Got to wonder if MS price windows cheaper les people would jolly roger it

That would surely happen! Besides it has been calculated that microsoft makes most of the money out of patents, and enterprise versions of windows. I would love to see windows 10home go for 80Euros or less. [Although there are some nice people that sell legit copies for as low as 15$ on reddit]

thinking back Game dev tycoon was £7 and still more people pirated it than bought it, so I don't suppose it would make a difference

I believe people will be more inclined to pirate a game than an OS. Pirating a simple game is fairly risk free, but with an OS you risk data loss etc.

Why?, even if you're on 7 you get the free upgrade... it said so in the article.

Right now current users of Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 will get a free upgrade to Windows 10, so these increased prices will not be affecting many PC current gamers, at least in the first year after launch.

Is there something to stop people buying an OEM windows 8 key and upgrading to 10 immediately?

I remember years ago I had a Vista license on my Alienware rig. Microsoft were offering a free 64 bit DVD. Well, sort of. You ran your key and paid a £7 handling charge and they sent you a 64 bit DVD. Sadly OEM keys did not work so it may be retail only. Either way my 8.1 serial has died so I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a retail copy because I want DX12.

How can a serial die?...

It would have to drop to below 1 cent to stop people from pirating as they always want something for nothing.

Not really, It's just that people who don't have money falling out of their pockets like some around here don't want to spend £100 on a piece of software that is limited to 1 install.

Nothing to do with wanting something for nothing, It's that corporations are getting over the top greedy.

The OS costs more than most of the components in my soon-to-be-built budget build for my gf. The price MS charges is just plain ludicrous.
