Win XP SP3 Killing AMD Machines?

Personally I would have installed them onto test machines b4 release and maybe once discovered that this can happen, make the thing check for either an AMD or Intel cpu - properly - and use either intelppm.sys driver or amdk8.sys depending on the result. It`s no good relying on what any oem says is in the build, particularly as an oem machine can change with upgrades and so forth.

They did beta this didn`t they ? I don`t understand.

I bet the repair procedure fails, and a reformat is the only answer. That or being pc savey, u can install the/a *fix* urself.

This is really HP's fault not MS or AMD; the driver for the processor is designed to be run with the CORRECT processor. Running it on the wrong processor is surely going to be inefficient to begin with and as it's related to power management and running on a laptop (a machine which should regard power management highly) surely this would have been noted prior to release?

they should slipstream their OS's specific to the processor, not just one for all...

Thats how it was done years ago and it was a stupid stupid idea. It was such a problematic way of doing things in fact that they invented linux as the solution

noo, what i meant, was ....say four versions of XP

one for intel desktops, one for intel laptops, (incoperating power saving features)

and same for amd, one for desktops, one for laptops...

No problems for me I'm running WinXPsp3 without a problem for awhile now , using obviously AMD processor
Nice AMD Core 2 Duo. I didnt realize AMD made those ;)

I have no troubles. This apparently like has been said is a fault at the HP end. For once M$ is not to blame.

More products to maintain, more time it would take, the more it would cost mircosoft, the more it would cost us.

I think it prefer it like it is now.

You're completely missing the mark here, I think he's saying that HP should streamline the installs for each processor and format by choosing the correct drivers and setting them up optimally before releasing them for sale.

It's really what you'd hope they'd do after putting so much effort into designing the hardware layout.

I have 3 comps and 1 laptop :), AMD on comps and Intel on lappytoppy :).

ok, but surely what i said above would relate just the same to HP as it would if it were microsoft?

To Microsoft it would mean lots more coding work and incurred costs plus testing, to HP it just means paying a couple of extra staff to create the extra Images and make sure they work properly prior to release.

Much much easier for HP to rectify, although if the OS was designed around the processor the performance results would be lovely :D

HP would have champion users testing the release. They are a large supplier to the industry, nevermind home users. In a similar vein Siemens test it.

Very weird that the power management driver incompatibility passed by unnoticed before. Surely for the top testers you wouldn't even need to use logic to tell you that AMD machines take an AMD driver and Intel machines take an Intel driver..
