Will it ever be possible

Probably the Games, they dont even take advantage of quad-sli / quadfire so why would you add more..

thay are already way past 8 gpu cores in a computer, i mean what do you think super computers use to render insanely huge and i mean huge images?

the public will not need such graphics card for another 10 years or so, because we still want it to be a "PC" Portable Computer, the computers that use these graphics are nowhere near portable, they are the size of a good server room or two.

if its possible yes, do we need it now? no, will we need it in near future? very unlikely

nVidia have chasis that will do it for you. You can create mucho processing power with them.

Go see the bank manager first.

Ok will it ever be possible to have 4 Multi GPU cards so u have 8 GPUs and what is stopping it now.
8 GPU's ever wondered what happens when you put 4 690's in sli?
each 690 has 2 processors, which means really your having 8 processors in 4 way sli.

i thought PC stood for personal computer, not portable. Pretty sure lots of custom desktops end up weighing too much to be called portable. One thing that is nice are laptops which are portable computers.

But you cant put 4 690's, or 590's or 6990's in SLI or Xfire. you can only put 2 of them togeather giving a total of 4 GPU's. and thats his point, he is asking why not.

I thought that it's not that you can't have 8 GPUs working on a normal PC today - you just can't have them in SLI/Crossfire.
Would be useless for games, but good for rendering.
So, the only real thing that is keeping people from having 4x690s all SLId up is the SLI drivers - they've not perfected 2 way SLI yet, yet alone 5-8 way!

Is it not possible to install more than 4 gpu cores but *not* link them via SLI?

To use for folding etc..

(I have no idea, genuine question)

You don't need to SLI cards to fold, they all run independently.

As for will it ever be possible to run 8 cards in SLI, probably not, because there isn't anything that requires it. Not for the regular Joe anyway.
