Core I7 please Help!!!!

Hi,

I am upgrading from a QX9770 Extreme to Core I7.

Have tried doing much research but t appears to be a competley different langauge now LOL :D

What is going to be the best CPU in respect of max stable overclock

was thinking of a 920 or 940 but can't help but think the 920 will overclock as far as the 940 have heard that the 920 is capable of 4ghz on air, fairly easily so I assume the 940 will only top at around 4ghz also since it appears to be the same chip although it seems to be hard to confirm the 940's max overclock as hardly anyone seems to have tried???

can anyone shed some light???

I also did take a look at the extreme version however it appears to bee poor value and this also tops at around 4.1 ghz except maybe on LN2 etc so certainly not worth the price in my case I'm sre

I will be overclcoking useing the rampage extreme II X58 M/Board

All in all I am happy with my qx9770's performance @ 4GHZ is impressive to be honest, but I have had a good oppertunity to the new generation so cannot pass up the upgrade.

I appreciate a good fast system with quick boot up and no waiting around in the OS I mainly play games and require it to be able to keep up on games as demanding as crysis far cry 2 and so on, must be somewhat future proof for the next wave of FPS titles I will most likely sell one of my GTX 280's as I think 3 is overkill and run 2x gtx 280's in SLI I highly appreciate graphics therefore games must run smothly with max graphics settings @ 1920x1200 res (28'' LCD)

Any opinions thoughts/guidance greatly appreciated.

sorry for the long post.

"sorry for the long post." Np :p

I would (and did) go for the core i7 920. It's the best value and has the best OC potential compared to its budget. A 940 doesn't really offer anything more (higher somethingthatdoesnothelp and sometimes 100-200MHz more clock), and a 965 is waaayy to expensive for my likings.

As I said on the other thread; yes, a 920 will probably hit 4gHz. I do not have any experiences with the rampage extreme, but I assume it's a good clocker.

I too think the 920 seems alot better value gues it also depends on your luck as to wether CPU well or not so well.

Thank you for your input:D

Another vote for 920. The one I purchased for OC3D from Ebuyer has already been hitting 4.2GHz with the help of a Gigabyte board.

I believe so. Webbo has the kit at the moment so he'll be able to tell you what he did to get there, but the screenies did indeed make me lick my lips :p

EDIT: the retail one i purchased from ebuyer did yea. Normally its only OEM ones that dont.

TJMax is 95C, that's when they start throttling down. For most 4gHz clockers that's about the only limit to temperatures there is.

so it safe at say 85 C in prime 95 testing and this won't kill your chip.

so is there not a point in wich your chip is too hot that it may damage it in 24/7 use for example 55C idle?

No, 85 is no good. 85 with a max of 95 is serious going to pop-corn ur cpu. If the mobo is any good it should be set to turn off when/if u hit 85.

If the max is 95, don`t go near 75 on a regular basis. Hit it whilst doing one-off benches, u probably ok, but not 24/7.

Hmm is that knowledge from the Core2 series or from i7? I have seen several screenshots of i7's running to the 90 during priming.
