Why you don't need >500w PSU.

NickS - this is intriguing.

If i were to swap out my 7900gto and replace it with either 8800gts/gtx, do you think that the hiper type-r 580w could power my rig? (specs in sig ;))
 
My friend has a E4300 @ 3.2 and a Evga 8800GTX Running on a 500 watt. Along with a 680i, and 4gbs of ram...580 should be more than nuff imo.
 
I know we shouldn't dig up old threads, but I got one of those plugs that displays wattage being drawn from mains, and my rig, clocked to the nines at full load pulled... 400w!!!!!!!!
 
heh I never saw this before and I'm glad because it backs up what I thought. I've always gotten relatively small wattage PSUs. The online PSU wattage calculator are also rather accurate. I really don't see the need for huge PSUs unless you have a ton of HDDs. Great job nick despite it being a few months ago

Where did you get it form? Id like one for my PC and it'd be usful for a load tester for my phase.

And how did you load it up out of interest?

For the rest of you, I'd load it up via running Orthos priority 1 or 2, and then running 3DMark 2003 or 2006. It's hard to load the GPU + CPU at the same time tbh. Make sure you're runnin Small FFT's in Orthos

Its pretty shocking tbh.

To load - 4 instances of prime, small fft's for ram and cpu and rthdribl for gfx.

The upside is the psu never makes a noise as it is never tested - pcp&p rate it to 825w output, you were right, I'll never need to buy another psu again.

Edit: Noticed there was some free ram so loaded memtest too, and maximised rthd... Added 70w so Real full load 470w

Erm, when i set that thing to say that im going to overclock my Q6600 say to 3.5 it jumps to like 800W.... =/
 
Weird.

I put my specs in and it was almost spot on 450w - not bad considering it pulled 470w under stupid load...
 
Good cos if these HX620W psu's can't power the pcs im building im gonna have one Angry Army brother looking to kill me ^^ lol.

maybe they arn't accurate for Quads?
 
I'm telling you right now, look at the rig in my sig. Now add voltage and overclock everything. I ran 4 primes, 2 mem tests and real time high def light at max res on a 24" - simultaneously - and maxed at 470w...

The corsiar will do it, you are safe.

I'm pretty sure itjust takes the max load of all devices and adds it up.

Also take into account that your reading from the mains will be higher than the actual power being drawn from the PSU by your components as the PSU is only 80-85% efficient.

6850/gtx... I wish I had from the start.

If you do go for a gts get the 320mb - save some cash there as there is no difference in perf. Then buy the 9800gtxyz in Nov...
