Why Are Upload Speeds So Bad In The UK ?

At the moment in my new flat I'm on a 200Mbps line with a 10Mbps upload, if I pay Virgin Media an extra £10 a month I get a whopping 10Mbps extra upload speed.....

Friend of mine in Romania pays less than me a month and is on 500Mbps down and 250Mbps up with no data cap, It's nuts, And that's meant to be a country still developing.

Why is the upload speed so bad compared to the download speed in a 1st world country ?

If you're lucky you get a maximum of 100 down and 40 up in Australia so you got it good comparatively Dice

I have to say I'm one of the very lucky ones as I have 95 down and 37 up :)

There are areas in Australia (and I don't mean rural - I mean in the city - e.g. Sydney) where you can't even get 1 up.

I don't know what you did to get 37 up Excalibur, but I am very, very, very jealous.

For what it is worth: i'm on ~30 down and <1 up.

It sucks.

Edit: It's so bad, that i've considered (quite seriously) purchasing and paying for a CORPORATE internet line, just so that I can get decent speeds.

You're on cable yes? cable has always sucked for uploads. I used to get 30 up on Plusnet fibre. Just ran a speed test, got 75.17 down (they upgraded me for free a week or so ago lol) and 19 up. Edit. On BT. I am with BT now.

The main ISPs just don't offer it for consumers, see it as less important.
If you had a virgin business line for example, you'd have the same up as down.

Companies like Hyperoptic offer the same up and down speeds as standard. As you live in a flat you may be able to get a hyperoptic line installed if you register interest.

FTTP broadband services are more likely to have better upload speeds, I don't think there's a technical reason, just seems it's that way.

I have the NBN on here it's FTTN but luckily for me the pillar and node are diagonally across the street from me, normally speeds from FTTN are crappy

I think in Norway its normal now for your priceplan to have equal upload and download speeds. I guess its the direction ISP are going to stay competitive with one another.

I did always dislike the upload speed i had when I lived in Swansea though.

The reason companies don't have the same up and down speed is because of the equipment they have. It has to do with synchronous and asynchronous equipment that provider owns. When I was was in networking school, we have a field trip to a service provider and I asked them about that. It's not because they don't want to offer you more upload speed, they can't for the equipment they own.

I actually asked Virgin Media about it and one of the reps basically said and I'm paraphrasing "The brass at the top want pure profit and refuse to invest in newer tech until they can squeeze every penny from customers".

Try living in the US. Unless you're in a metro area or have been blessed by the google fiber gods, you're just happy if you can get broadband. You worry about the speed later. At home I'm on a 60/6 cable connection. They offer a 100/10 connection as well, but the price increase isn't worth it. I'm already paying $60/mo for what I have now, the 100Mb service is about $100/mo.

I think sometimes people forget how populated the UK is and just how many people are using the Broadband. It has a lot to do with what you can get and the bandwidth available.

I live in a medium sized city(if you'd even call it a city) and our prices aren't bad. 100/10 is only $45. Spectrum is only offering that one plan too. 2 years ago it was 50/5 for $35. So definitely not that bad. It's just where you so happen to live

I'm on Charter Spectrum here as well. I could get it cheaper if I bundled their other services with it, but I don't need their other services.

You would think over time that equipment would be covered under the equipment life cycle and automatically changed every 5 to 10 years. This equipment should have a depreciation life cycle, and they playing with the numbers. Or its cheaper to buy non synchronous and they don't care customers wants.

You're lucky you get 10 I get just about 1mb upload. In 2008/09 my upload speed was almost nothing, I could just about upload a picture. Thankfully it's improved somewhat since then.

Richard Branson is a moron that's one reason not to touch Virgin with a barge pole.

I agree but the only other ISP's in my area are BT and EE and they don't do anything over 20Mbps down and 1Mbps up due to only offering copper lines so they were no go choices.
