Due for a format soon

Was wondering which operating systems to run..

I was thinking of getting rid of Raid and installing Ubuntu 9.04 for work purposes internet etc.

Vista x64 for gaming

XP x32 (tinyxp with legit key) for...ummm...work which ubuntu cannot run (?)

hmmm

Think Im going to **** Server 2008 on my ummm...... server to see what its like actualy, its the machine I can format the quickest without any worries really.

Be nice to see if its better than XP.

Is Windows 7 still legit to install ? Be worth having that on something if only to get used to it.

The choices u have there tho are pretty solid, sort out a nice multiboot option.

There are other OS choices, but to be fair they'll involve a bunch of messing around, googling and re-installs.

If you have a key you can use 7RC till next June. Its not all that different though tbh, I found the transition better than the when vista came out.

I'm pretty pleased with server 08, pretty easy to use, not had many compatability issues (apart from sounds drivers). It can't do some of the stuff XP could, but on the other hand, it can do servery type stuff (obviously) with IP addresses and whatnot, and considering I got it free and legit, I can't complain.

So vista x64 literally for gaming

Ubuntu x64 9.04 for general stuff like internet, music and shizz

tinyxp for the above but for stuff like visual basic, office 2007

Windows 7 for - umm - messing around with? lol

If i create partitions for the above, then install ubuntu last, grub should detect them all for me shudnt it

server 2008 uses the same kernal as vista. Any new installs we do now, we're using server 08 instead of server 03.

You could wait till oct 22 for server 08 r2 (its the new kernal, same as win 7).

I'm running Server 2008.. painless to uses.. just install the Desktop Experience Server role and then your off. There is a website that gives you a neat little program that changes little things e.g. the shutdown logger etc.

Downloading Server 08R2RC now, Im a novice user in the server respect but hey it will give me something to play with if I ever get time :p

Reps to pyro for the link

I might give it a crack then as my networking knowledge is basic to say the least and that looks like an awesome package.

My server doubles up as the rig I use when Im in the shed so spot on!

@ pyro

with the r2 workstation converter it says it has an issue:

Known Issue

The UxTheme patch may in cause an unbootable system in a few cases. To fix this, boot up the pc in Safe Mode with Command Prompt, change directory to %windir%\System32 and rename the UxTheme.backup file back to UxTheme.dll. Now reboot and everything should work fine again!

can you just explain this as if you were explaining it to a child please *blush*

I get the change the dll bit but it doesnt say what directory to change to %windir%\System32

also does the R2 have both 32 and 64 on it to choose from?

the convertor is old (for server 2008 non R2) and is swapping in files from older versions

i didn't bother with the uxtheme patch or the sidebar stuff incase it broke anything

i actually set things up manually, installing the desktop experience, enableing a few services, audio etc.

in the known issue above, it is saying if you have problems with not being able to boot...

to boot up in safe mode, navigate to <windir>:\Windows\System32\ and rename the uxtheme.backup file (created when u patched) to uxtheme.dll and reboot again normally
