Ok here goes. Had a fx-60 on an A8n32-Sli. Prommy ran about -55 at idle and processor was about -30 ish. Now I have a Core x6800 on a p5n32-sli se delux. When I got the new 775 kit however, the screws that mount the head to the mobo no longer have springs. Which screws do you guys prefer....the spring style or the new double o-ring short style? Not sure my cooler is on tight enough because now the prommy runs at -60 and the cpu reads -8 or so. Its obviously not on right I know. Also, should I use the arctic alumina that comes with the kit or should I use ceramique or silver 5? I have all 3 but just want your 2 cents

I have used both bolt mountings,and i easily prefer the spring loaded bolts.Ceramique is best the t.i.m.

I prefer the springs personally - but either set is fine - to make better contact all you have to do is add more washers to the bolts.
What I like to do - is set it all up (as you have there already sealed and ready to go) and then start the computer and go straight into the BIOS. Whilst reading the temp monitor turn the screws down until the temp no longer changes or the screws can be turned no more - if the screws have reached a limit and the CPU temp is not within 30 degrees of the Mach display (assuming the CPU is at stock of course) temp then you need to add more washers to help you make better CPU contact.
As soon as this is done make sure you seal the bolt holes with seal string

Make sure that you screw the head down evenly, that is to say that the bolts should be fastened the same number of turns at a time (start at say 5 turns per side, then as more resistance is felt use you discretion to make sure that the head is level on both sides).

found the issue
well, im an idiot. After taking the evap off the processor, I saw that it was making no contact at all!!! I guess I was a little to liberal with the seal string. I then noticed that the stand offs on the 775 kit are about halve as long as the 939 kit I had on the fx-60...which is why 2 layers of seal string worked on it and not the x6800. After removing the crazy amount of seal string and making sure it made contact it fired up to a nice -38 on normal fan speed. all is good now...thanks guys! Also, whats the difference between alumina and ceramique temp wise? I bought ceramique the same day I bought the 775 kit. I only put the alumina stuff on it because it came with the 775 kit. Is it worth it to rip it all apart again and put ceramique on it or is that a waste of time for a degree or two? Thanks again

Glad you got it sorted,i personally wouldn't bother stripping it to apply ceramique,as i dont believe there will be any benefit.Is this a gt at -38c, at idle or load ?,stock or clocked ?
its -36 to -38 at idle stock. Having mad issues with clocking this processor. Ive yet to get this x6800 to run at anything other than the original 2.93ghz. It just wont go...even a 3% bump will either freeze the pc (19 times out of 20) in 30 seconds or it just wont boot. Ive tried everything but even the one or two times it was stable for a few minutes, the instant it started 3dmark06 or any other intensive task it locks up imediatly. Sucks to because stock is 50% faster than my old rig with a 10% overclock on it! Had 22541 3dmarks in 03 with my FX-60/2 gigs 2-3-2-5 OCZ platinum and 7900 gtx (single) Now I get 33222 with x6800/2 gigs xms 2 1066 and xfx 7950 gx2 (single)! The fx-60 wwould clock at whatever I wanted without a sweat..this one is a little more tempermental but the benchmarks show its potential! Thanks for the input everyone

If that IS a gt sitting at -38 idle stock,then i believe something must be wrong,and that something is probably the cause of the instability.
