Which GPU for Folding?

atm only nVidia GPU's are supported for folding in Linux.

There is a siginificant advantage to be gained when SMP folding in Linux as opposed to Windows. You get a much better TPF -> QRB, and the OS is free!!

Does anyone know if there are similar advantages to running an nVidia GPU under Linux vs running it in Windows?

The reason I ask, is that at some point in the near future I plan to replace my SMP folding rig with a GPU based one and I have 2 options.

1. Go nVidia and run it under Linux. (Won't have to fork out for OS)

2. Go AMD and run it under Windows.

My budget for a GPU is £250 ish, which is in GTX 770 or AMD R9 280X territory.

I'll be using an old 775 board, E5200, 2gb mem & sata 2 SSD.

What GPU brand, model & OS would you recommend for best PPD/W?

Yep its that way atm because of the lack of drivers...

"Folding on AMD GPUs is problematic in linux due to poor OpenCL driver suppport from AMD, so GPU folding on AMD hardware is not supported at this time. This could change at any time with a newer driver. Linux GPU folding is still in beta testing."

Arh bum! Wish I'd known that before I formatted doh! I knew I should have done dual boot with visualisation or a USB install instead...

...Oh well you live you learn.

AMD R9 280X will probaply out perform a GTX 770.

A GTX 770 in Linux will not have to put up with Core 15 WU's as only Core 17 WU's are available in Linux GPU. If core 17 isn't available then there is nothing to fold...

So kind of a mixed bag atm
