Which core for overclocking?

Hi Guys, which AMD core is best for overclocking on a budget. I am upgrading from athlon XP. Thanks

I have a friend who likes the idea of Sempr0ns... he claims they overclock quite well. I've fallen out of sync with what's going on at the moment, little else to offer I'm afraid :(

[edit: semprons aren't cores, I know....]

Well I'd go for an Opteron 146 at the moment. They're damn good value and get a great OC off the block. The Venice cores OC pretty well too mate :)

EDIT: Semprons are ok but they have a smaller cache so really I'd get an Opteron :D

Damnit, why'd I go with Winchester... :P having an Opteron sounds like a cool idea, that didn't occur to me as a possibility... how great is a great OC?

I've got my 2ghz opty to 3.1ghz ;)

The Venus cored Opty's are hitting 3+ghz on air no sweat for the most part... 3+ghz on an :amd: is pure pwnage in every form.

The Semprons do OC fabulously for the price, but the low L2 cache is kind of a bummer. 512k+ is optimal for serious performance.

And not all Winchesters are doomed, trust me when I tell ya. If you can find a week 50-52 '04 (I think this is the date range) these are some truely hardcore clockin' chips. I took my $150 3000+ up to 2.8ghz, a solid and stable 1ghz overclock on air with my XP-90 and Panaflo. But if you recently purchased your Winchester you definately didn't get one of the mentioned procs. You should be able to get a solid 2.6 out of her though.

At the moment my A64 3200 winy is running at 2.554Ghz with generic ram, that is one reason why I asked about what ram to buy.

sry fragtek , XMS and Dave , But the best stepping for an opteron would definitely be a CABNE . Same stepping as an FX . But if u want an opteron better get one right now since AMD is phasing them out of production soon.

Hi all,

Any idea wher I can buy this core stepping from in UK? Thanks

It's always going to be luck of the draw mate... Unless you can find one on eBay that has the stepping listed.

Otherwise, companies don't let you choose what stepping you get, they just send you whatever they have.
