When to buy a new gaming rig?

When would be the ideal time to buy a new gaming rig, should i wait for ddr4 as a gamer, and also wait for the new cpus to support ddr and the new mobo's? or should i just buy whats on the market at the moment?

Decisions decisions

DDR4 will be very expensive at the start and only available on the X99 platform until the Z107 platform launches next year.
Buy what you can afford now otherwise you will forever be playing the waiting game.

Yea sounds good. think ill go for either z97 or z87 sabertooth with 8gb veng pro ram and a i5 4670k overclocked. thanks alot

How does the phrase go again...

"If you can't afford the best, then get the best you can afford".

Too philosophical for this time of night!

its not weather i can afford it or not, i just want a good performing pc for cheap.

I know mate, I was responding to Dicehunter :).

For me, the best time to buy a new pc (or component) is when I think I want it and can justify it ;). When you're on the cusp of new stuff coming out it gets tricky; how long do you wait, are you willing to pay the premium for new stuff etc.

For example, there are some good new games coming out soon like Watchdogs, Wolfenstein etc. Do you want to play them on your current rig, wait until you get your new kit, or play them now on new but potentially surpassed kit?

Probably just before Christmas last year when GTX780's were insanely cheap for a week. I should of bought all of them, why did I not buy any

lol I know someone that did that.. "I want to wait till ___comes out." but each time that came... oooo!!! looks whats coming in 2 months!.... etc etc etc...

if you are ready to buy, DO IT!! lol

I dont know, Ive always found that no matter how long you wait and no matter how long you shop around the instant you buy something, something cheaper and better will come out. There is always something better coming right around the corner. I just say buy what you need when you need it. If your rig is cutting it now then there is no harm in waiting til the Haswell refresh or Haswell-E but if youre struggling to play even at medium settings then go ahead and pull the trigger.

Nowadays especially, whenever a new generation of something comes out, its not that big a leap over the previous stuff. I bought a GTX670 not very long before the GTX770 came out. At first I was pissed then I saw it was only 2-3% faster. Same with a 4770K vs a 3770K. What, maybe 5% faster?

Don't play the waiting game, just buy the very best you can right now and ride it out as long as you can, then swap out the gpu for a newer one... Tried and tested strategy in which you only need to build a whole new rig say once every 5/6 years, with a new gpu maybe every 2/3.

Even if you get a 2nd or 3rd intel gen system with about 8GB of RAM, a decent GPU and PSU, SSD and nice cooling. With the OC potential it will still last a couple of years or so.

As others have already said get what you need when you need it, as a bit of a bargain hunter I've often noticed the prices for this sort of thing are normally very good in March and September
However with ddr4 hopefully coming in a year I would have to say try and make do with what you've got because ddr3 will only be desirable for another couple of years and then become dated, as ddr4 should have more longevity and you maybe able to carry them forward into another rig
Good luck with what ever decision you make

yea man i had a p67 sabertooth i absolutely love them! sold my last rig tho =[. I think i will just wait awhile until i actually want the pc, like after summer. and hopefully some new stuff is out then. once again nice to see the amount of feedback thanks

Also really depends on what you have for how long you want to wait. If you have an 8 year old pentium, 2gb ram etc... a step up to ddr3 etc would be a huge upgrade, but if you had say a 2500k/3570k etc... then you can happily use that until new stuff comes out and prices lower, whether its in a year or more.

If you want to buy now i would advise waiting till the next intel CPUs come out. Not for the sake of getting the latest and greatest but for the sake of cheaper deals for the current z87 platform/ Haswell CPUs.. the extra money could go towards a bigger ssd or GPU. Then again i only buy when a deal is to good to pass up. I never pay for retail prices unless i'm in absolute need of it.
