Whats a sufficient upgrade for a HD4870 512mb?

I usually keep my GPU's for quite some time before I decide to upgrade. My first upgrade was from a 6800gt to a 9600gt and then finally decided to get a 4870 around a year after the 9600gt because it really wasn't all that. I try to get the most out of my GPU's and don't see the point in upgrading to a newer model just because it's the latest thing.

Although my 4870 is still a great card and handles all the latest games at 1920x1080 with low to medium settings I would like to crank tha graphics up. I'd be hoping to achieve around 35fps+.

Another problem with the 4870 is that it runs far too hot and consumes a massive amount of power.

I'm looking to upgrade for less than £150 and don't mind buying an older card second hand. I really want something that's going to last me at least another 2 years.

it really has to come with a HDMI and a DVI. I would like it to support DX11 also and run BF3, Crysis Warhead, GTA 4 aswell as all the upcoming games I intend to purchase such as GTA 5, Street Fighter X Tekken, Max Payne 3, Tomb Raider, RE Operation Racoon City, GRID 2, F1 2012, Fifa 13, Far Cry 3, CS GO, WarFace and ARMA 3.

Obviously I won't be expecting to run ARMA 3 and GTA 5 maxed out but I'd like to think it will be able to handle a large proportion of the others I intend to play at high settings.

I did read up on an article over at Toms hardware which has written off certain cards for me such as the gtx460, 6850 and 550 ti which i was previously looking at. Even the 6870 looks slightly below what i'm looking for if I go on that advice. Here's a link to the article i'm talking about...

Yeah anyway I would be thankful if I got some opinion's off you guys here at OC3D.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I'd go with a 560Ti you can get them new for around £150 and slightly less second hand now. They are capable of running most games maxed at a decent frame rate, even BF3 on high settings, not sure about ultra settings though. To be honest I wouldn't go for anything lower especially if you plan on keeping the card for a couple of years.

I agree with SieB, the 560ti are awesome cards, especially the MSI twin frozer II version

560 ti are going for around £160 - £180 new and around £100+ on ebay where as I could pick up a 5870 for around £80 on ebay. I can afford a second hand 560 ti but does performance boost warrant the extra spending? The 560 TI does look impressive but I really want to squeeze as much power out of the card for as little sterling as possible.

I'm really liking the look of the XFX 5870 to be honest.

I agree with the 560ti but the 2gb version not the 1gb. I would not go anything less than that if I were you I would try to get a 7850 or a 480. they are another 30 to 45 euros but you will most def get your money out of it if you keep it 2 years.

I just saw your post about running sli on the 560's, they are a great card to run sli on the performance boost is worth it it wont be quite as good as a sinlge 580 but better than the 570.

The 5870 is a good buy for £80 it's around the same as a 560ti performance wise. If you want to save as much money as possible go with the 5870 if not the 560ti.

If you want to stay in your budget go maybe go for 6870, you can get new one from aria for 128,39£, but if you can get this 5870 for 80£ then go for this one if you dont mind second hand.

Buy new to get a warranty and wait for the next nvidia 600's, maby they'll do a treat for £150. My brother runs Witcher 2 on a 4870x2, he's not chuffed with that, and recently played Witcher 2 on a GTX680 and was very satisfied, and I think GTX600's will do the same for you at £150. Being poor and not having a warranty isn't fun

i have been umming and arring about upgrading my 5770 since january, but @1680x1050 it still plays bf3 on high @30ish fps. the only reason i havnt upgraded yet is because i want to see if the 660 comes with 2gb. i would hate to buy a 560ti now, only to regret it 6 months down the line

oh yeah. i cant bring myself to buy a second hand, just in case it has been hammered.... which it prob has

The 660 and 670 aren't going to be that cheap guys, they will be priced around the same as a 7870 and 7950 seen as those will be the competing cards.

Im using a XFX 6870 £129.99 from aria and it plays BF3 high settings with everything on at 45 fps no bother.

Also plays every other game I have either maxed out or at high settings you cant go wrong for that money.

I have also used them in crossfire too and they near equal to a GTX 580 only 260 quid though

Was thinking about buying a second hand 5870? I'm really not fussed about second hand cards to be honest. My 4870 was second hand also and its been running with no faults for 2 years straight.

I don't think I want to get a 560 TI to be honest, there a little over my budget. I've seen a few 5870's selling for around the £80 to £100 mark on ebay. That would leave me some room to buy a h60 and maybe even some new case fans.

What do you guys think of this card?

It's got a good reputation, runs basic DX11 graphics very fast but is not well equipped to run some growing complex DX11 features, of which complex tesselation stood out to be its killer, so Crysis 2 tesselation pack is not recommended.

I have read about many 5870's dying due to overclocking and driver problems

Yeah but it looks really cool

So this tessellation problem means i'll be getting lower FPS over the newer DX11 cards in the latest games? I'm not sure how bothered I am with this because of this. I just really love the whole look of the card and the performance looks awesome yet the price is pretty damn cheap now.

I'm not intending to run Crysis 2, I might re install it in the future just to play online but to be honest I never liked it. I would really love to be able to play through Crysis Warhead on decent settings as I never really got the chance with my 4870.

As for Overclocking and driver problems I don't intend on even bothering with bumping any settings up anyway and I'm sure the latest drivers are up to scratch seeing as its over 2 years since the cards been on the market.

I'm thinking of just being sensible and going for a 560 ti, possibly even a 6870. It's just the 5870 might turn out to be a great card for me and it would save me a fair bit. Decisions

Did some checking online and the 5870 seems to be overpriced imo.

I had a single 5850 for a while, and now two in crossfire.. The drivers are sorted out now, there was some issues in the beginning though.. The 5870 is a great card and all, but it's starting to get a bit old and outdated, you will have to turn settings down more often that you can turn the up..

Imo, wait for a 560 Ti on sale, or someone selling a used one for cheap.. Here is a comparison between the 5870 and 560 Ti:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/294?vs=330

The 5870 beats it in old games, but the 560 Ti seems to be better in newer games.. Down the road the 560 Ti will be the better choice I think...

Just my thoughts, quite a hard decision though

If you go with the 5870 for 80 try to grab two that should do you for the next two years since you're saying they hare half the price of a 560ti used and over the next two years save up for a 680 or whatever comes out within that time frame
