What to do with crappy PC?

I got an old PC free from a friend and was hopeful I could mess around installing loads of stuff on it. I tried FreeNAS but there wasn't enough RAM to do anything even slightly quickly so then I tried Ubuntu but the PC is too slow for it.
Specs are Sempron 2400+ 1.67Ghz and 125Mb RAM, no dedicated GPU.

Any ideas on what I can do with it?

I had a computer with similar specs. I installed Archbang linux on it, then installed ZNC and BitlBee. Now I have my own IRC bouncer with chat accounts (including facebook) built in it. :)

no both mate and cinnamon are big desktops ,its Xfce that is the lightweight desktop environment, i am ruining Mint xfce on a 1 ghz laptop fine
Your cpu is fine but the ram a bit lacking... if you tel me what ram it is (probably ddr 1 but can be sdram ) i have some untested sticks you can have...

Also give puppy liuxs a go its made for old kit

And if you can't neither install any lightweight OS nor sell the system to some oldware-lover, drill a hole in the CPU and use it as a key chain

:downit:

Nothing wrong with that CPU :( I've been using it for like 10 years now :c
You could indeed try linux, though if you can get your hands on 1GB of DDR RAM and a cheap PCI/AGP GPU, you could install Windows 7 on it, it's what I'm running at the moment :)

Consider donating it to charity mate, lots of third world countries are crying out for our old PCs. Even if its only good for running dos based stuff, they need it.
