What setup would you choose from the following?

Exchange rate is US$1 ~ JPY80, but that is not really relevant because I have to get a card from Japan anyways. Out of these setups, what would you suggest for a 2600k @ 4.5 + Z68 Extreme 4 + Corsair TX850 + 1080p screen? (i cannot tolerate noise and would overclock the cards as much as reasonable)

[MultiGPU setups]

Gigabyte GTX560 GV-N560OC-1GI (2 in SLI) - used, costs 16.5k yen per card

Gigabyte HD6950 GV-R695OC-1GD (1GB) (2 in CF) - brand new, costs 22k yen per card

Asus GTX560 Ti DirectCU II (2 in SLI) - brand new, costs 23k yen per card

HD6950 IceQ X H695QN2G2M 2GB (2 in CF) - brand new, 26k yen per card

Asus HD6950 DirectCU II (2 in CF) - brand new, 28k per card

[Single GPU setups]

Afox GTX570 - second hand, 23k yen

Zotac GTX580 ZT-50101-10P - second hand 34k yen

Asus GTX580 DirectCU II - brand new, 45k yen

*second hand means, no warranty. maybe just 1 week's checking warranty. brand new must be 3 years or so.

my only issue with SLI/CF is microstuttering. otherwise i wouldn't even consider the GTX580

The Asus 580 in the single GPU setup would be the better route to go if you want the fastest single GPU, but price/performance wise you can't beat the 570. I am always going to stick to single GPU configurations because it really is hit and miss with Sli. Some people have no problems and others are riddled with them.

Yup, I totally agree. 570 would definitely be a great choice if you're looking for price/performance. 580 is the card to have if you want to go all out. I think the 560 Ti would be very great for a SLI configuration as it's already a very well performance card in single GPU setup. Price/performance for the 560 is fantastic.

I generally stick to a single video card since I don't need the extra performance from multi GPU setups. Like yassarikhan786 has mentioned, SLI may not actually bring you the best of performance you're looking for.

Yup, the HD 6950 would also be another to think about. You could try getting the reference cooler design and see if you can unlock it to become a 6970.

Hi,

I'd say one GTX 570 for now...then treat yourself to another later. I did and it's been great.

Maybe I've just been lucky but SLI has just worked for me. I literally popped in my 2nd (different make) GTX 570, enabled SLI in the driver settings (I did NOT update my drivers as already had the latest WHQL ones) and ALL my gaming profiles were updated to enable SLI. SLI works fine in new games (Bar RAGE which doesn't support it properly *) and in all the older titles I've played.

Even a single GTX 570 is a great card, two are awesome though and will certainly extend the useful life of your PC build.

* RAGE doesn't support SLI, however you can assign one card to do the rendering, while the 2nd handles the AA and multi-sampling - so you get the max FPS ONE card can do with no AA or MS, but still have fairly high AA and MS applied so the game looks good

i cannot find any non-reference GTX570's for cheap. they are more than $100 the reference models. i hear people say not to get the reference models.

The reference models are fine. They run quietly and quite cool compared to most of the AMD 6 series video cards. So no worries there. Which video cards are you able to find currently?

Does it look the same as native AA/ SS or is it a bit distorted/ muddy/ grainy?

Hi,

Looked really good to me, definitely an improvement to overall image quality in my view.

For the record I'm using two GTX 570's, BOTH of which are labeled (on the box) as "reference" cards, yet they did change the reference design on the more recent cards.

My original 570, bought soon after launch, is long and as a single "blower" type fan near the far end and is of the Vapour Chamber cooler design. Power connectors are on the TOP of the card.

My newer 570 is shorter and has a central, larger, conventional fan and is of a standard Heat Pipe cooler design. Power connectors are on the end, but the card being shorter doesn't make this a problem. This newer reference 570 is also known as the "HD" my some manufacturers, but Inno3D who make my card do not call it this.

For the record the newer card runs a bit cooler, though it is the lower card of the two so gets slightly better air flow. However, while the older reference design pumps air out the back, the newer reference design dumps much of it in the case. Not a problem for me as I added a side extractor fan to deal with that.

Cheers,

Scoob.
