What RAM should I buy?

If you want a system to last, you go to LGA 2011. I'm sorry, but getting the i7 over an i5 for bragging rights is just down right foolish.

Why though?

I have the money to buy the 3770k, and I'm not not buying something else because I cant afford it. If there was anything else I wanted to stretch to, then I may consider it, but I dont. I have no need to save the £80.

I've done research into both extensively, and I know I'm not gunna see any performance increase at all. I've even considered getting the 3930k just to say I have like the second best mainstream processor Intel have ever made, but I think that's a little far to spend £300 more than the 3570k just for extensive bragging rights

Honestly, it'd be smarter to get to i7 3820. Pretty sure you can get some decent OCs with the multiplier and its 2011. It's the third best i7 that intel makes, so there's your "bragging". And ever thought of just saving money to do something like going out to chill with friends as opposed to wasting it on nonexistent bragging rights?

lol, incredulous over here. "no need to save the £80"... you know there are other things to spend money on than computer parts, especially as a poor poor student?

anyway back on topic i just checked out the hyper x genesis and it's listed at either 1333 or 1600mhz, 1.65v. you didn't specify the speed, but nonetheless you will definitely need new ram, if only because ivy and sandy don't like 1.65v ram. get a 1.5v kit at cas9 and 1600mhz, because beyond that is for either people who run memory-intensive tasks, or enthusiasts who enjoy overclocking as a hobby, and not specifically for gaming.

edit: lol njallday said it before me

hahaha, this hasnt gone down too well for me has it

I didnt mean to say 'no need to save the £80' bit like that. I mean to say that I've calculated costs of all my upgrades, including the 3770k, a 7950, RAM and full watercooling, and still not even spent half the money I have available. I am wanting to save the money for uni and stuff, but I have said I'll spend up to half and save the rest. Therefore, if I really wanted to, I could easily enough get a 3930k and a GTX 680 comfortably enough, but I think that is completely pointless. I would like to have an overkill system however, and personally don't think the 3570k is. I just personally prefer the sound of, no programs yet use hyperthreading - but I've got it anyway if they do!

Can I ask why people are recommending the 3820 btw? In benchmarks I've seen the 3770k comes out on top, and I can overclock it better anyway?

Thanks for that info though! That does help a lot

Get what ever you want - at the end of the day we are here to advise and you already know what you are choosing to spend your money on so enjoy it!

As for the 3820/2011 socket argument - well the 2600/2700/3770/3820 chips all perform identically. There is no advantage to having 40 pcie lanes unless you want to run 3 pcie3 cards and more than 32gb RAM. The i7 builds are essentially inseperable. Sure you could upgrade to one of the hexacores but I think you would have chosen to do that now.

Some people say that 2011 socket will last longer (I have not seen a roadmap which suggests this beyond IB-e) and that even if it didn't you would be able to upgrade to a hexacore down the line to save buying a new motherboard.

I prefer not to do this since even these i5s have plenty of life in them and I would prefer to buy a cheaper cpu and mobo more often than the alternative since I work the system hard including some hefty overclocking and would rather retire it early to a comfortable second hand life when it has a higher value.

This way I never actually pay more for than half the value of the new component thanks to the resale value and it is a lot easier to get £80 for an i5 than £130 for the 3770k or £225 for a 3930k. Ultimately it makes little difference down the line except perhaps on your length of upgrade cycle and since you are probably not going to have much spare cash around at uni then I can see an argument for getting something that will last if you can lengthen your cycle (yea right - you're a geek like the rest of us!).

Thanks M&P - You seem to understand me more than the rest of them

And I do tend to upgraqde my system whenever I have the money tbh, whether it's a second SSD, new set of fans or what, I do just enjoy getting new stuff to play with, as do all of us!

But when it comes to processors and motherboards, I prefer to get high end stuff straight away so I dont have to upgrade them. I stuck with the same motherboard and processor for like 3 years, before eventually changing motherboard, because my mate sold me a 2 week old ASUS board that was £105 new, for a tenner which i couldnt really say no to!

Also got his set of 2 weeks old 8gb Ballistix sport for a fiver at the same time, hence why im using mix and match RAM at the moment!

Not bad to have mates that spend over £100 quid on AMD stuff to decide 2 weeks later they're going to intel

Ha yea that would make life cheaper!

As long as you keep the cpu for a while longer than you would have kept the i5 then you will roughly break even on the deal anyway so I do get that plus there's only so long I can be bothered to argue a point - once you have all the information all I can do is help with your decision

which will work fine but it is only a 512 chip set and thing are starting to move more towards the 1024 chip set ram that said by the time it's the case hopfuly the cost would have come down by then

Hopefully indeed, btw just noticed the quote form Hitchikers guide to the galaxy in your sig, epic film
