What mobo to buy - Confusion

Hello to everyone.

I am about to buy a new mobo for my pc, and lately, i am very confused in what to buy.

I have already bought 4Gb DDR2 RAM, quad6600, XFX 8800 alpha dog (g92).

But i really don't know what to mobo to buy. I am about to spend 250 Euro for a mobo, but there are so many choices, i don't know what i need.

Well let me explain :

First of all, i don't think i will even need a 3-SLI as i won't buy 3 GTX, but maybe i will buy a second GTS later. About overclocking i think i would like to overclock the quad to 3GHz, and i am actually like to play games with a good frame rate so so that i can enjoy them. I also don't know now, if i will update later to a 45nm cpu or DDR3, as i usually sold the whole pc after 2 years and bought a new one.

So the bottom line is that there are lots of mobos, but i really can't desicide. Some choices are :

Asus P5N-D (s775, DDR2, 750SLI) (133 Euro)

Asus P5N-T Deluxe (S775, DDR2, NF780I) (240 Euro)

XFX nforce 780i (~220 Euro)

Evga nforce 780i (~220 Euro)

nforce 680i chips

I was leading towards the Evga nforce 780i as it is supposed to be very good, but then i thought, maybe the Asus P5N-D is a better deal after all as i can do my job with less money, and also not knowing what will come later.

Well on the other hand it's nice to know that you can expand later on if you buy a 780i.

Anyway, i think you all get the point of what i am trying to say.

Please if you have any suggestions write me something.

Thanks to everyone here :)

Yeah, i have already read this, but it's doesn't look like a good deal. I think the Asus P5N-D is a good deal but there are no review till now.It also supports also the new 45nm CPU withought bios update, but still don't know what to do...

Thanks anyways !

Should SLI define what mobo to buy ????

Should i just get the ASus Maximus Formula and stop there ???

I don't even know if SLI is worth, now that new graphic cards are comming.

Please help !

You should only get a SLI board if your 100% positive that you want SLI. Which is only really useful for benchmarking.

If your on the fence about it forget SLI and buy a board with an intel chipset.

The only other case in which you might want an Nvidia board is if you dont plan on overclocking, or only want a tiny increase.

Maximus would probably do fine.

The Maximus is pretty awesome. I'd definitely get an SLI motherboard, but personally I'd look at the accessories and think about what you really need. There are boards that are faster than the Maximus, but it does come with a lot of nice kit.

i reall don't intend to buy a second graphic card, soon. Last time i bought a sli mobo i thought of the same thing, that i might one day want to make SLI, but if time passes, the new graphic card come out, that are mostely better than two in SLI. So maybe why not sell the old one and buy one new.

Sli comes with other problems i guuss like more noise and heat, so there is an other minus agains... Somehow i think i am answering to my own question, but there is still this question " if i might need it".

--> Sounds like nvidias marketing trap in the end ! <--

"Marketing Trap" is very true.:)

I use SLI how I think it was designed for, low end cards. I get almost double with my 8600GTs but if you use 8800s its like 20-30% improvement.

I finally bought the Maximus Formula which i must say is absolutely great !

I just have a weird problem though.

I installed the motherboard in to the pc case and i get the following. When the case lies down in works just fine, but when i try to lift it up it closes and if i push the power button in start for 1 second and then shuts down. I can't figure exactly what it is, but something seems not to be in the right place, bit can't find what. If i push the RAM hard it seems to work, again the RAM is good installed.

Any suggestion maybe ?

The board seems to have a clever bios.. it does sometimes start for a few seconds shut down and then restart.

Well that is what mine does.. it runs perfect and is an amazing board. :)

Usually happens once I have overclocked.. or for a first start up in ages.

Could be something like ur cpu heatsink isn`t on correctly.

When it`s on it`s back, gravity makes it touch the cpu. When u stand it up it could be leaning away from the surface of the cpu. Maybe a moment is just long enough for it to overheat.

Be sure the clips of the heatsink are clicked in properly.

U using a stock cooler that came with thermal goo already on it ? O u use ur own ?

Yeah be sure those crappy push`n`twist 775 clips are in, and if u got ur thermal goo on, u should be ok.

A quick temp check when u turn on would be a good idea. Theory being, they mostly auto-shutdown @ like 85 degrees or something. (easily obtained if the cooler isn`t fully on)

Yesterday i checked after several shut downs that the temperature was 18C, but i will check again, if this big cooling system is properly installed
