What is Overkill?

I already know the definition of "Overkill," that being something greater than required. But this has to do with GPUs and how many monitors you have. I look on this forum and some others and people say things like (not directly quoted) "2 580s is overkill for one 1920x1080/1200 display" or "a 6990 is overkill for that specific display."

Why if I may ask?

I can conger up a few responces like the: "you will get well above 60fps in your games" or "because they are meant for eyfinity/surround" or My favorite >> "unless you are benching."

See I find this stupid. I use a 6990 (watercooled and OCed) on ONE 1920x1080 display. Now granted I am someone frequently wanting more power this is NOT overkill by ANY means. Sure SOME of my games can be maxed out, but then you have those other few games such as Crysis and Metro 2033 and a few other beautiful games you are going to want to go passed the settings used in game. Now that I have a 6990 OCed to 1ghz core and 1400mem i can EASILY have Crysis bring it to its knees even at those said clocks. I now go through CCC, or for Nvidia user "Nv Control panel." From there I take my gaming to the next level in quality. Changing things like "Super sample" AA, "Enhance AA in applications," "mipmap" to high etc...

All of this without downloading a single Crysis visual mod and using ONE 1920x1080 display.

Sure these GPUs are meant for multiple displays, but with just one you can enhance your gaming experience never seen before through the provided drivers.

What say you?

Couldnt agree more with you mate I myself want a mars 2 but I have a lightning and I'm using one monitor. Nothing wrong with it dude

Over kill can be implied also when some one's system is going to bottle neck, people will save money by buying a lower end mobo with only 8x/8x SLI or 3 way SLI 8x/8x/4x and then try put 2 or 3 GTX580's on it.

Well for one it will bottle neck on the 8x PCIE slot's

and if they do find a board with all 16x Awesome for benching but gaming well adding a third card it simply wont scale like they would like.

Buying a i3 and x2 580 would become overkill.

I think overkill probably relates more to its cost a lot as well. Like when GTX580's came out they were $1200AU buying 2 of them was simply overkill because the money could be spent else where. Now you can get them a lot cheaper and wouldn't be seen as unnecessary as it was when they first came out.

As for the Mars it will probably come out at $1700 to $2000AU and you will be limited to the bandwidth of a single 16x PCI-E 2.0 slot. I can see over kill as it will bottle neck. Now 2x 580's in 2x16x slots would preform better and at first will be cheaper than the MARS. Now if the MARS comes out and will work on PCI-E 3.0 It wont be such over kill as it will be able to preform to its full potential.

I don't know overkill could be viewed in so many ways. But also with people starting to game on 2 or 3 screens due to them being cheap, overkill isn't being reached as much.

But as always, Todays overkill will be tomorrows underpowered, It has been the way for years and will be the way for yeas.

Mars will be around 1200 to 1300 but I mean if people save there guts out (like myself) to have the most overkill parts as they desire it's just an expensive hobby

PC overclocking/gaming is already an expensive hobby! over 2 years i have had over $4000 worth of parts in and out of my computer. Right now my rig (if bought all new parts) is around $2400.

I am the same and still looking at pitting another 1500$ threw my PC lol overkill FTW!

I think both of these points are true

I also think the start of this thread is a sort of rant over a difference of opinion.

There are different types of overclocker/enthusiast.

Some overclock to save money.

Some overclock to have the best.

Some spend stupid money for e-peen.

Some set a budget and spend it on the best so they don't have to upgrade for ages.

Some set a low budget.

Also people have different uses for PC's

Not everyone buys the latest games etc

So when someone posts asking what components they should buy and what they use their pc for, is it wrong for people to say a 6990 is overkill? and potentially save them a huge amount of money.

Quoting from the top, I think people say something is overkill based on more than what display they use. Cost is a huge thing and cost/performance is also a huge thing.

If you have unlimited money then fair enough but some people like to set a budget.

It does not look you understood my post then. Overkill is when something is MORE than necessary. If someone bought 2 6990s of just counterstrike, THAT is overkill, BUT NOT for someone who wants to max out crysis. For some, Like you said CAN be overkill, but a lot of people say it is overkill of ONE display because that card can run the game at or above 30FPS.

So you basically are just ranting/complaining that people say things are overkill without getting all the facts? and are just basing their view on how many monitors you run?

Soz thought it was a thread wanting some insight into why people say stuff is overkill.

I am not ranting NOR am i complaining. When people refer to overkill they do not see the other games were that so called "overkill" is a stupid term. I said "then you have those other few games such as Crysis and Metro 2033 and a few other beautiful games you are going to want to go passed the settings used in game." The people who generally say overkill look at the narrow picture. While the majority of games would max very well with 2 580s or one 6990 that does not mean all, which can be clearly seen some people assuming. To some overkill is getting 60FPS in everything or above 30FPS in everything and back that claim with "you cant see passed 30FPS." While they do make a good point it is far from overkill. I prefer to play my games at 60FPS so the motion is more fluid. To some overkill can be a matter of opinion, but i am saying it is not, rather a mis use of the word overkill.

The eye can see well past 200fps but it's not as simple as you might think!! go check wikipedia i think they got a got topic on that

The old saying "to each their own" fits for people saying "overkill", it is too hard to tie down what is overkill in a general term for PC builders as different people have different needs. Like i would love an SSD but wont buy one as it is overkill for what i use my PC for.

I think Jeremy clarkson Said it best.

"my watch can go to depths 1500 meters, I dont dive, nore do I swim very much. But its nice to know the watch will be ok if I drop it into the sink"

So true....

The only overkill gtx cards solution out now would be two 590 gtx cards in sli and that's only because it's pointless because of poor sli scaling.
