What does your PC mean to you??

Its been a while since I started a thread. At work today I had a discussion with a work colleague which actually turned out quite interesting. Basically the discussion started over consumers and how they use there PC's. He was ranting a bit about how PC's are predominantly items found in the spare bedroom or home office, my reply was "*******s" to put it mildly. Now I know alot of gamers still like to have there main PC seperate from there Entertainment centre (mainly due to there partners/family etc), which is kind of the stereotypical image for the household PC, however I think times are changing.

I can only speak about myself, so heres a brief outline of how I ended up with my main pc running everything. Living with my ex she was the old school, pc in the back bedroom, end of story. When I bought our first flat panel it came with a DVI (42 inch LG Plasma), at the time I was running XP 64 on a socket a 3200 and a radeon 9800 xt, and i found it simpler to drag the pc downstairs to watch video rather then converting it to dvd. So the PC had a seperate place in the front room, as I tweaked it and configured it for my amp and diplay panel I then boycotted sky and jut used a satelite card. Slowly but surely she came arround to it being a permanent fixture in the front room rather then stuffed in the back bedroom, as it was saving us money. We split. I stayed there, got rid of alot of the electrical crap that wasnt being used and just streamlined it, so that basically it was the PC, TV, and DTS amp.

Now when I met my gorgeous new younger model mrs, she thought it was amazing running everything off the pc, now heres the snag, shes a big gamer too, bloody WoW knows no pre-sex defined roles, hence the purchase of a laptop so we both have something to do.

My work colleague does not understand that the way we use computers have changed that much and he see's them as predominant business machines and not a viable source of entertainment and that they can be the centre of any entertainment system. He is over 60 by the way. Now my boss saw my current set up and actually got me to put together a setup similar (better TV then I could ever afford :() and he loves it.

Now heres where the flames are going to start, one of the main things I can see influence this dramatic shift in PC useage and how the younger generation are using PC's is one thing. And some are gonna hate me for saying this. But its Vista. Vista brought it together. Media Centre, reliability I could go on but I won't. It wasnt until I was running Vista beta that I streamlined my setup, mainly because the media/stability and how it integrated with my entertainment system was not as fluid in xp as it was with vista. Vista killed my VHS :D....

My PC is the centre of my setup, that what my PC means to me. And my mrs thinks the same. (and my one year old finds hours of amusement in sneaking across the front room and turning it off mid soap opera or footy)

So what does your PC mean to you?????

(holy **** did I really type that much...if you've got this far you deserve a gold star)

:D, crazy amount of text but I read it lol, pretty much the same with me :). My girlfriend understands what a PC means and how I base my life around it . Before she met me she knew that MSN loaded up and how to look on Myspace :D. I explained programming concepts and how things actually worked and she was amazed, now she can actually talk computers with me :), she is really beautiful and smart too :), great bundle indeed.

The comp I have by the side of me isn't built yet will be soon, will be placed in living room with my new TV :). The PC will be used for gaming mainly, although my GF will be glad that it's out the bedroom she will miss it I know she will :D (the flashing lights send her crazy).

The PC is pretty much which I spend most of my time on, I spend around 6 hours at college in front of a monitor and a few hours every night behind my own computer.

Computers have evolved so much over the past few years, I still remember having to check my emails and how long it would take to load on my 56K sending data at around 10kbps, now I'm streaming at 2.6mbps and pages are instant. The guy has a point about business but that is by no means the only thing in which PC's are used for.

wouldnt go so far as saying that i have talked in depth about programming techniques with my missus, but she knows a fair deal, she's left with it all day whilst im at work, and no complaints.

I understand that most older people see it as a business machine however he was kind of stalwart against the idea of it being the centre of entertainment. I think this is the first example were seeing of a generational split in terms of computer use. and don't get me wrong i'm no spring chicken. The way he spoke though reminded me of that old TV show "BBC Micro Live" (youtube it if yer too young, well worth a watch), I actually thought "god you senile old fart". Glad he's up for retirement in January :D

ROFL, nice little nasty twist at the end of that comment :). I'm only 18 so never heard of it :( will have a little peak though. I don't think she really wanted to know at first but... I'm a consistant guy lol.

Hmm toughie for me really.

Scenario one:

Old flat, very small rented (1st place with the missus). Previous to this I'd been in a spare room all the time using my PC. In flat I HAD to be in the lounge as it was our only social space. She used TV and sky, I used PC. Totally disperate. I then put together a media PC which worked OK, but had some flaws...including a GPU onboard chip that kept resetting itself (I sorted it out after a while but it took a while). No my HTPC was sexy as hell but really didn't work on the CRT TV as it was hard to read and a PITA

Current scenario:

New flat, much bigger. TV/Sky/PS3/Surround sound in lounge. Me and my PC in spare room. Spare room then has a TV installed...and another PS3...and an Xbox 360...and a sexy surround sound setup... Now the PC is hooked up to the big TV but what's the focus of the room?? My PS3 IS my media centre. My PC is used for browsing an very occassional gaming but tbh I play on the PS3 more than anything else.

It's kinda weird as the PC was the centre of my life for ages, but now the PS3's made it shrink back down to being an occassional gaming machine, a net surfer and a work tool

Stealth edit: I read all of it and kinda wish my missus was a gamer :(

i had 3 amigas....500, 600 (won at gamnesmaster live 1992) and a 1200...the days before heatsinks and fans...don't think overclocking would of been capable....you may get from 14mhz to 17mhz...which is quite a good percentage OC :D....

@kempez...

Yeah alot of people still prefer the consoles...but me and the mrs are hardcore mmo players (i'm on warhammer at the mo)...and consoles just don't cut it...plus the fact that with my xbox360 controller most games are available on the pc that i'll actually sit down and play so my pc acts just like an xbox...i haven't really been a massive console fan since the megadrive....although i do like my psp for the journey to work:D

Just watched this omg lol, amazing might have to get myself one to OC, wonder what score on 3DMARK 85 I would get.

OMG look at the mouselag when he moves the mouse... and the way the buttons are like actual massive buttons sticking off it! LOL oldest PC we had was an Atari but it aint got nothing on that! [Even though the atari was text-only :p) That thing you can actually see where modern PCs evolved from.

Computer for me is a tool. I do work, game, media, net.

Computer is also something I`d quite happily spend 24/7 interacting with. Often with TV/Radio in the background or to the side.

On the enthusiast side of things, it`s not so much that I want to clock the best out of anything I have. Sure I`ll do it for a run, but then settle down to the 24/7 running. Just can`t leave things alone tho.

I have 4 pcs at this current moment in time, even tho 1 has to wait 2 weeks for a new mobo and a handed down gfx card - I spend a great deal of time thinking about what method to build all 4.

Since I can`t leave things alone, I made the decision a few years ago not to use cases. I went for mounted LL trays, to aide in this constant switching out of things. Almost like a trickle down from the gaming pc to the other 3.

I do admire people who can build a pc, in a great case etc, and have it sat on their desk, working 100% for months on end. How u never get the urge to take something out, put something in.. blah blah I dunno.

Is a strange situation atm tho, in so much as all 4 of the pcs are 775 and ofc this is running it`s course now. Next year will be all i7 stuff, but even so, I`m already identifying stuff that I can keep to trickle down or outright have to buy new. It`s just constant hehe. But in this instance, I feel the elastic strap attached to my bank card even more as I have to realise that the 775 is getting as good as it can and u don`t really want to invest too much in new stuff for them. Tough.

If I didn`t have any computer.. I`d probably go nuts tbh.

The trickle down of parts does seem to benefit my family tho. Rather than bin or waste my time selling stuff, I tend to build them pcs from what comes out the other end. Recently 2x AMD x2 pcs were built - and ofc worked great at my place, but the thing that does my head in over everything else, when other people use pcs - they tend to break down. Which is mainly why I could not go into the public for building or repairing. Far too much come back and ... "idots" I guess. I do not have the attention span for any effing around.

Computers generally work fine until the user interacts with them, imo.

your right ras, most people are idiots. God knows how many of them i get on the phone every day. Saying its broke, and the ammount of times i get "well pcworld said...", its no wonder internet fraud is booming as simple procedures are not put in place, I cleaned a laptop with 147 virus's and over 1000 pieces of malware and even a few key loggers, and the guy was oblivious to the danger he was putting himself in. His antivirus was 17 months out of date and he didnt think that was an issue. I told him to watch fonejacker and take note of George the Nigerian, as he'd probably be getting a call from him soon.

I used to endlessly tinker, but when I started working in the IT trade I tinkered less, and then add a kid into the mix it went from less to "when I have to"...
