What do file services do?

Im doing some networking homework and I was hoping for a better explanation that what i've found

So far ive kinda got
"These services are used to store and transfer data files as efficient as possible. Users can use the service to move a file (such as an order receipt) and be able to send it to various machines at once without having to resend one after another. This service ensure efficiency by prioritising traffic,"

but i need at least 100 words and i cant think of anything else at all to add onto it :(

Im also guessing that "Application services" allow the programs to be stored on a file server for example and run from there to take all the strain off the workstation it is being used on?

Tbh m8, I doubt I could write 100 words on it.

However, in a slight variation to "google is ur best friend", I tried "msn search is ur best friend" and a whole mass of listings of people who promote this sorta thing explaining to potential customers (I guess) what it`s all about :)

Is this generic or platform specific?

For windows off the top of my head you have

Distributed file system

Volume shadow copy

It should be easy to write up at least 100 words on them use microsoft technet.
