Western Digital to offer hard drive discounts.

Great until you realise that dabs or the like are still probably cheaper - as it is discounted off the retail price, not the prices of online stores. Oh, and the warrenty on the drive whos serial code you used is now null & void. Nice.....

....also, on a completely unrelated note, I don't own any western digital drives so cant take part in the offer. damn.

EDIT - sorry if the above sounds moany, it just seems that manufacturers are offering these great sounding schemes, that on the face of it are great news for us, when if you then look into them the offers crumble into something thats worth very little.

IMO what it looks like is theyre trying to cut out the middle man and persaude people to buy nothing more than WDs.

That would rock. I have a whole bunch of old WD hard drives laying around the house that I wouldn't even think of running anymore.

lol my old wd should still work, im a bit of a collector  and tend to keep things aslong as they work.

You don't have to get rid of the drive, it just voids the warranty on that drive. So as it looks I think they still have to be within their warranty period.

That's a bad thing why? That's how it works, Ham. ;)

Sorry for slightly off topic comment:

I wonder if there will be a follow on savings associated with the new revised Ultra 320 (SAS) technology that Maxtor and Seagate already have out in their newer drives. I haven't seen WD's version yet. Admittedly it is aimed at Enterprise, but it's hardware compatibility with SATA drives will allow for low cost. Mmmm Ultra320 = 6Gbit speed SAS :worship:

New info on this!
