Weird Problem

Hi,

Got a very weird problem. I'm pretty experienced with PC's so can handle fixing stuff and building but never had this.

I'm using a Sctyhe Mugen 2 cooler with Gigabyte GA-Z68-AP-D3 board. The fan is not completely silent and I can hear what it's doing (Albeit it's not very annoying)

When I'm playing a game, for example in Football Manager, if I hold down the left mouse button on a menu you can hear the fan speed up, if I let go it slows back down again. But weird thing is it don't do it in every area of the game, for example if I left mouse click into some space don't do anything but on menu's or other spaces holding it down there or just clicking it's like the fan has an auto respond to certain menu's and different spaces within the game (Weird I know and hope this is clear)

It don't happen in firefox.

The mouse I'm using has no name on it and is not USB, I guess should try with another mouse such as a USB one? But I'm interested to know what this problem is and if it's normal.

Thanks in advance.

Sound's to me like a driver problem but then again, as the CPU’s fan is thermal controlled. Hum this is really boggling my head. I remember my very old 2600+ used to do this when online and viewing pages with lots of animated ads. But the reason for that is obvious. the only thing I can suggest is to install a temp program that overlaps on screen when in gaming, then look for temp spike's that correspond with the fan speed... also update the bios, search for new game patches.

I expect when you click menu in game it requires much more CPU usage and so the fan speeds will increase.

Let me no how you get on I’m very interested.

Okay done some tests.

This is in football manager.

If not pressing the mouse or doing anything CPU will be sat @ 1%, with temp around 33c. When I click on a certain bit of space in the game menu and hold down left mouse click the CPU goes up to 25-27% and temps around 42c.

Core 1 is still hovering around 1% while core 2 & 4 are about even with core 3 going up to around 55%.

The game is not loading anything I'm just pressing some none button area's and holding down left mouse click.

I've just noticed something else ! This is even more strange

When I'm on firefox or desktop and I move the mouse around everything is normal, but if I load up steam and move the mouse around there it's doing something similar to above.

And just tested it on several bits of other software and it does the same, so it's doing it on applications, but if I keep moving mouse around overall CPU usage is 20-22% and core 1 & 4 doing something with 2 & 3 not doing much.

Next test will be different mouse, but will have to do that tomorrow.

Edit: Found something else, on firefox it happens when I use the middle mouse button scroll! Cpu only goes from 3% up to 7% though with this one.

Ok i think everything is normal, apart from the football manager thing, witch is a software problem not your pc.

if you want this to go away, disable CQ in the bios.

I realy think this is normal.

Okay, just never experienced this on any other platform, or with the cooler on 775 socket. I'll see how another mouse is, if it does the same I'll trust your word and disable CQ, as it is pretty annoying.

Thanks for the reply.

its not a problem with the mouse....its intel speed step as well as cool and quiet..... its a power saving option that can be shut off in bios.....the cpu equates mouse movement as a precursor to needed cpu power....(usually you use the mouse to click something right)

you can see this in action if you open up cpu-z at start up.....dont open anything but drag cpu-z around a lil bit and watch your mhz rise!!!
