my mobo (maximus VII Hero) came with a software CD but my new build has no optical drive. how should i go about getting that software on to my new PC?

Hello mate, you can download it all off the Asus website, just find your motherboard go to Support then drivers and just download the ones you want :) there will be bios updates on there to :)

As has already been said get your stuff from the manufacturers web site and just keep it in the back of your head that the drivers on Cd's are usually out of date

You only really need to update your bios if the current one doesn't work properly, you definitely don't need to download all software from the site. I generally skip all the 'overclocking and tools' stuff and just stick with USB3, Audio, Network, chipset, Sata drivers etc.

Most of the times the driver downloads on the website contain newer drivers than the CD does anyway.

I normally just keep network drivers and windows does an OK job of installing all the drivers you need.
