LOL, are you serious? do you really expect anyone in this world to write a whole OS in binary? millions upon millions of lines of code, all in...

Microsoft have enough of a problem getting things out on time.

I do agree with some of your comments above, but you have to remember that theres going to be more "average" pc users than the techys of us. People who arnt going to be able to go out, find, install a 3rd part sidebar.

techys can easily disable/uninstall this, but would a non techy be able to install it?

Based on the above, i think they made the right decision.

When you say file like os, do you mean one without a gui? I think we'll start to see this in the desktop enviroment soon. Server 08 has the ability to be installed without a GUI.

Think it`s Yahoo that has an anoying sidebar download. Some1 like them, I keep banging on at my niece about using it. 2000% the same as the Vista sidebar, cept tbh I like it`s rss feed thing. Can`t find a bigger/better one for the Vista.

U can non-gui windows installs at the moment. During installation u can switch between the two. Something like F10.

By file like OS, I think I`m hinting more at making the OS lean more towards working than looking nice. Basic principles of an OS are files, we seem more interested in looks.

to those who said re-write it each time.. what do you think would happen to backwards compatibility, games wise...

Like a new directx 12 or summit ? U`ll get a fair bit of backwards compatibility.

you upgrade to a ground up new os and nothing old works..

Quoted from an existing OS forum maybe ? Definately familiar.

In fairness if you don't want the shiny, user-friendly GUI stuff go get yourself a clean linux and install that. Don't buy MS products and moan about them

Think u gotten the wrong end of the stick. Might`ve been the way I wrote it.

Perhaps if everyone who hates Microsoft so much does this then linux will actually make more of an impact

I`m amazed myself how many peoples use Linux, I`m almost ashamed I don`t.

I see, i thought you meant install with no gui at all. The shift f10 is just to bring up the command promt during install.

..i bet alot of those people are techys or know a fair bit about pc's, not the average person. I will never say i hate an os, i will once again say that each os has its pro's and con's, you just have to find the one that suits your pro's.

*coough* You know, the 640k base memory weve been stuck at since like the 286? The one thing limiting most of our performance.

but the 640k base memory is a limit of the processer, not the os.

Isn`t it a requirement to boot "dos" ?

Not dos as in msdos7, but to be able to start a "pc" in it`s most basic form without a traditional OS, which kinda is a hangover from the days of 8086.

Think this is more a hardware holdback than the likes of Windows.

Further to that, I think u`d need to rethink pcs as a whole to be rid of it. Probably both parties working together. However, I don`t think they look at 640k as enough of a millstone.
