Hello

Ill be visiting UK for the first time in my life 23. feb. and Ill only stay there for 2 nights. I booked a hostel in Rumford.

What is the cheapest transport method in UK? I have to transport to London city and later on to Birmingham. I have no clue of the expenses. I just need some heads ups and what I should be expecting to pay during my stay. If anyone have the possibility to estimate or to find the exact amount for transporting from Rumford to London city and back again, I would appreciate it mega a lot! :) Same for Birmingham.

Anyone here located close to Rumford and interested in meeting up for a cup of tea or something? :p Could discuss anything from pc related stuff to places to check out in London :D

Velkommen til Storbrittania!

There is no cheap alternative to be honest. I flew in from Oslo to London and found it was just as expensive to take the train as it was the express bus.

I would suggest checking out greatwestern.co.uk and also nationalexpress.com.

However the prices on greatwesternrailway or not trust worthy at all because if you buy a ticket on the day from a kioske at the station, you can get it much cheaper even though its the same train, date and time. I found out the hard way over Xmas when I went home to the UK.

The national express bus from gatwick/heathrow to London should be reasonably priced though.

I think I flew in to Stansted last time, and a bus/train from there straight into London (Liverpool Street) was around £20.

If you look up Megabus, that'll be the cheapest option mate. They run a really cheap, service between major cities, the only downside is they are super early in the morning, and I think have to be booked in advance.

Book your train tickets through err...whats that site called? I don't think its trainline. Anyway you save a small fortune through them and you can just pick them up from the station.

look on www.moneysavingexpert.com website - they have loads of tips on how to travel cheaply including things like buying 2 to different train stations on your route as they can work out cheaper than on ticket straight there.

Hope you enjoy your stay and the weather stays British. :)

do you buy the 2 tickets AT the station/on the train or do you buy both lets say the day before?

sorry, couldnt understand all that they were saying at their site :http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-train-tickets
Too many new words im not familiar with :/

Pretty sure you can buy tickets at the station itself. I've never heard if making reservations for a train ;)

I'm pretty shocked at this considering you are living in the UK. I always booked tickets, even when I was travelling back and forth to work.

One thing I noticed that has changed though is that you dont seem to be able to reserve specific seats on the firstgreatwestern trains anymore. You can book a ticket and sit anywhere except first class now it seems.

Anyone knows what the best method of going from Stansted to the following address? 92 Whalebone Grove, London, RM6 6BL. Time of arrival approx 19:30 GMT

Edit: also, how does the bus system in UK work? Do you have to pay for each bus you ride or can you use the same receipt within a defined time frame over and over again? Lastly, can you pay with card or only cash?

Big thanks!

In the same city you can usually purchase day passes which allow you to travel on several bus lines for the day at a single cost. I'm not sure how this extends to travelling across different bus companies though?

You can't pay by card unless you're travelling through London and use an Oyster Card.

Tbh using Google maps is usually pretty good to get a rough idea of how to get somewhere using public transport.

from romford essex to london will be around £6 there is london city bus ran by stagecoach that will run every 20 mins return tickets are or were £9 as of last summer.

now from romford to birmingham your better off looking at national express or going via train prices vary cheap day returns using great western are from around £15 but i havent used them in years so could be far more expensive now..
