Virgin Media will be doubling their UK broadband speeds

I've been trying to persuade the missus that we need to upgrade for a while now, looks like I may not have to anymore.

Though 300Mbps would be very nice.

I might have to keep trying to get her to agree to upgrade after all.

100% garanteed it knackers the Ping's and latency AGAIN

And here I am now on a BT line fighting to get them to fix some aluminium cable crap that's dropped us from 66 to 39 in the last 2 weeks.

How are BT so far behind

We need to start our own fiber company, with faster access to blackjack, and .....................

VM have done a good job of doubling broadband speed for the last couple of years now and they keep getting faster :) Maybe we will be seeing them as the first 1GB/s provider in a couple of years.

Yeah it'll be that speed off peak. It'll also be non-existent for people in my area as they never get anything upgraded unless it breaks.

The problem with this is that the exchanges take a huge hit, and to balance the output out those on a slower speed get their speed reduced to compensate, our telecommunications infrastructure is ancient and is in dire need of a major overhaul to accommodate these speeds properly.

I think the speeds will actually be 200/20, 150/15 and 120/12, but unfortunately I still cannot talk about what I know as I was told after being sacked due to illness that I cannot provide information on the network expansions etc.

I didn't sign an NDA and wasn't explicity told to keep my mouth shut at the time I was sacked but when I received the letter, with my P45 I was then told to keep stum which is annoying but I have got to follow it.

Interesting times ahead though ;)

I would legit pay for that hyperoptic service, but there's just no way that'l ever come close to us :(

I had a heated conversation with a Hyperoptic rep a couple of years ago on another forum via pm's, which resulted in me deleting alot of post's, out of a thread about them because it ended up with me told by my now ex manager to remove them or I would get a written warning, I can only guess they were in discussions with VM at the time.

They claimed they were able to give each person in a MDU (multi dwelling unit) a 1Gb connection, that would give them 1Gb to other countries and when questioned about it, I got a fair bit of abuse about it and told to shut up as I didn't know what I was talking about.

When I mentioned who I to worked for at the time, they stopped responding to questions and instead just started to try and get me banned of the forum which didn't work and then they dropped of the forums and went quiet.

All I was interested in finding out was if it was a true 1Gb connection rather, than 1Gb throughout the UK and then if the speed dropped to less than 1Gb when leaving the UK, as it would have got me interested in there services but they wouldn't answer and after the abuse I got I decided I wouldn't think about signing up to them if they ever came to where I live.

Not many companies can offer a 1Gb connection to outside of the UK for the price that they charge, as that is basically classed as a Business Connection and they cost a fair bit more than £60 a month.

When I asked if they would also install just a single occupancy home, they said that they would but it would cost nearly £2k to install it as they prefer to do MDU's.

They may have changed since then but if people want to sign up to them, go ahead but make sure you are getting what they claim and not some poor attempt at a decent connection which, is limited to only giving you the quoted speed within the UK.

With BT, VM etc you get the speed you pay for within reason within the UK and when your data leaves the UK.

If I'm honest the speed I have now does me I have no complaints, for how much I download £60 a month is way to much, but if virgin want to double my speed I'll no complain about that either.
