Viewsonic Pro Series TFTs / CSS Gaming & Graphics card

What are they like when it comes to colour reproduction/pic quality with arty farty design programs in comparison to a good CRT..?

I mainly do a lot of graphic / 3d design work and want the best quality monitor affordable (budget of around £300) with the highest res possible..

I was thinking of buying a 20" instead but the native res on most screens is 1600x1200... What sorta spec PC (or graphics card :p) would I need to run CSS at this res with atleast 60fps in intense moments? would a 1900xt be able to keep up?

:)

viewsonic are a reputable company, and most of their TFT's are good quality.

For £300 definately look into widescreen, maybe the dell 2004fpw. They are great quality and the high resolution will be good for graphics.

For 1600x1200 and even above a 1900xt will be fine. You should also be able to keep 60fps with fairly high settings, maybe even highest (perhaps minus HDR).

Any more questions...fire away

Graphics wise id recomend you go for nVidia. A 7900GTX would proably do well. Alot of people here will tell you theyre ATI nightmares if you ask, all went crawling back to nVidia, I'm one of them.

Ive never had a problem w ith ATI, gone through many nvidia and ATI cards. I use ATI cards fine on my widescreen monitor.....Get whatever is better performance for the money, at the high end they both make great cards.

Btw, my X800XTPE (AGP) runs 1680 x 1050 great on my 2005fpw on CS:S, I even have a lot of custom models and whatnot. I run 16AF, 2x AA, everything else max'd.

tft's are great for space and clarity and crisp images..

but, some/all? will have noticable colour banding on gradients, for example if you had a crt and you had a 3d ball in 3ds, it's look smooth and gradiented nice, however on a tft (i dno if any are 32bit yet) you can/will see colour banding since i think they're still 24bit or just above,

its no biggy but it can limit your colour palette i use 2 19" tft's for graphics, 3d and 2d and gaming, with a dual 7800 setup, and i'm sure something of that level will easily handle what your after, even a single 7800 handles CSS with ease, even with HDR.

ps, if your big into doing stuff in 3d/2d get 2 screens if/when you can afford it, you'll never go back, think canvas on one screen, tools, and everything else on the other.. it's simply awesome and i swear using just 1 now kills my productivity.

anyway my 2 bits n a penny

good luck

16.2million colour panels displays around 256.000 colours and generate false colous by dithering.

how much of it you se depends on several aspects.

i dont se it but im often 80cm from the screen, if you sit 20cm from it you might se it.

i have a viewsonic vx924, has a 3ms response time and can not se any ghosting when gaming.

btw resposne time is nothing but a big ugly lie.

a 25ms screen can be better at gaming than a 12ms screen.

respons time is measured when a pixel goes from white to black which can be very fast easily less than 8ms but going from green to red can take way over 25ms on the same screen.

also the lower response time a tft has the less good it is at producing the right colours, its because the screen is overdriven by extra V.

so if a colour should go from 0-180 it can in reality go 0-200-190-195-180

the best bet is to se what you can afford and then read review after review after review.

and dont forget to check the pixel warranty.

Hey guys,

thanks for all the advice so far, I appreciate it :)...

Raven, can you sorta clarify what terms I should look out for with the dead pixel warranty?? Also... I just read several comments on another e-comm site with regards to this screen, all of them have commented that the screen came with 1 dead pixel! doesnt sound good to me :|

Note on Pixel Defect Policy:

For any sub pixel defect (red or green or blue) ViewSonic LCD display products are warranted in accordance with the ISO standard 13406-2 class II. On pixels ViewSonic exceeds ISO 13406-2 class II requirements not allowing for any defective (permanently dark or bright) complete pixel consisting of red, green, and blue sub pixels (“Zero Pixel Defect Policy”).

my vx924 has no defective pixels or subpixels whatsoever.

If pixel bad, we fix/replace.

yup but to avoid confusion, it does not cover subpixels.

a pixel is built up by 3 subpixels, a red green and a blue one.

a couple of those can be damaged without warranting coming in.

but some pixels can be reviwed by massaging the screen VERYVERY gentle, also some pixels/subpixels can be reviwed by a program that switches through colours quickly.

generally speaking im satisfied with my monitor, it was expensive but well worth it and i used it today with both my amd32 through a d-sub and my amd64 through a dvi cable and worked good and was easy to switch input, just a press of a button.

the downside with the vx924 is the stand.

it can almost not be tilted at all forward, i have a cd-case under the stand to compensate.

the 35w powerconsumption isnt bad either, but the big size gives a bad image in older games but it has nothing to do with the monitor itself.

Hey guys,

thanks for all your support... my choice was between the Viewsonic VX2025wm or the Philips 200W6C, both in my price bracket & both with similar reviews... I saw the Philips screen at PC World & have to admit that it was the best screen from their selection... sadly, they had no Viewsonicson display (I don’t even think they stock them!)… so I'm taking a gamble here after reading the reviews and decided to purchase the VX2025wm instead.

:D :D

should be with me by Monday/Tuesday.

I paid £297 inc.postage from Savastore.co.uk

The Viewsonic is actually one of the favorite 20.1" widescreens as it has a certain panel (forget which) that's real nice, same panel as the dell 2005wp and the screen is pretty cheap.

Hey guys!!

I recieved my screen today and it's fantastic... the picture quality isn't that 'crappy' compared to my CRT although it does seem a little bright.

I was shocked with my graphics card though. I was expecting 15fps at this screen res with CSS, but was getting a steady 50-60fps, min of 30fps.

I played a few DVD movies and they seem okay... obviously not as good as my crt, but I admit, when I upgraded my old ati 8500 to the fx5900, I was dissapointed with the video quality! I hope it improves once I get a 1900xt.

in comparison to the 20" widescreens i have viewed at the shops, this screen actually made me go 'wow'.

:D :D :D :D :D

great posts there Raven! very informative. reppies when I get home and on real comp :)

just my suggestion for a monitor; I would look at the new 20" widescreen dell, I thinks its like a 2005wfp (instead of fpw) or something. the reviews are great and the person I know that just got one is in love. it has great response and a very vibrant display with spot-on color / saturation.

for the vid card, pretty much any od the new budget cards can hold 60fps on a 20" display. the 7900gt's are great cards and the prices are only getting lower and lower. I've been out of it for a week though so who knows :p
