Vibration Noise

Recently my main rig, has this vibration noise, have no idea where it's coming from, I have cleaned all the fans etc and also the CPU cooler (NH-D14) and remounted it, but still getting the noise........ Sometimes it doesn't make it for a while. But pretty much does it all the time....

When it first started aking the noise I thought it was the PSU, but I have recently changed that, and still have the noise, so obviously not that.

If I get some Noctua fan vibration mounts, would I be able to mount all my fans in the case using these, Most of the fans are coolermaster?

I'm guessing its the fabs that are making the noise, I just don't know why (as they are all clean now)......

it may be one of the mobo's mounting screws, or a fixing somewhere else in your rig. check them!

your server has alot of moving (mech) parts and, over time the tiny vibrations from these can release gremlins that could, if not checked every few months, become a real headache.

rigs often go through stages of heat changes, especially as most of us do not have our PCs in environmentally controlled rooms, and as certain components expand and contract (ever-so slightly) their fixings become loose

once a month i, personally, give my rigs an overhaul... clearing dust and checking that all parts are still securely in place. it only takes 15mins (if you keep on top of things). they are my pride and joys. i clean my rigs more than i clean my cars

Its deffo coming from my main rig, as when I turn it off at night, the noise disappears.....

Never thought about the motherboard mounting screws, will give that a shot...... I'm not sure it is a fan now, and I have unplugged them one by one, but still get the noise, going to check all the fittings etc now

Update

Thought I had found the problem, one of the fan vibration blocks on the NH-D14 had fallen out..... I checked all motherboard mounting screws aswell, and cleaned motherboard and GFX cards etc..... I was convinced the vibration block was the problem... But I plugged it all back in , and still getting the noise

Guess its gunna have to be something I live with huh?

Have you tried momentarily stopping the GPU fans, just by putting your finger in the centre (not the blades) to stop it from spinning to see if its that, or using a utility to set them to zero fan rpm.

PSU mounts?

so... one of the vibe blocks had fallen out!!! just goes to show, that sh!t happens. if one had fallen out, perhaps others have OR are on their way!!!

i think a complete overhaul is in need

even if it means taking it all apart and re-building your rig

It could just be one of the hard drives making the noise.

I had a samsung F3 that did a loud pulsing vibration noise for abour 30 mins every few hours and it annoyed me so much I got rid of it and bought some WD's instead

Aye could be, cuz this is pulsating..... I have one SSD (ok its not that I know) and a Samsung spinpoint F3, I have tried pretty much everything else, i'll unplug it tomorrow and see

Cheers guys

Try placing your rig on rubber feet. Do you think it's the actual case that's vibrating or just a particular component (are you able to pin point the noise to a specific area of the case or does it appear to come from everywhere?)

i had an old aluminium server case for my old rig. after several years it started vibrating. not straight away, but after several minutes/hours of use. a firm tap on the chassis fixed it. i later found out that the motherboard tray was slightly bent - which led to a mounting pin (which the motherboard screws fix to) directly behing the mobo (5mm-high brass screw pins) not being tight.

It could just be one of the fans' bearings going. Try stopping each fan individually and see if that's the case. I highly doubt its the Noctua fans because their bearings are really, proper solid.

so we have ruled out the psu, all fans and the gpu?

only leaves the hdd, dvd drive and case, i cant see it being the dvd so take the back off the case and unplug the sata power cables from your data drives one at a time till you work out if its one of them. it could be its just not sat right in its mount, as said over time even the smallest vibration can loosen and move things.

have you twisted the case in any way? maybe put on an uneven surface and its not 100% square?

My money is on the HDD issue, I went through a similar thing troubleshooting what the noise was until i pin pointed it to the F3

I have a samsung H3 and it does make that pulsating noise that irritates me. I also have a Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAJS which is the same. I am hoping that when I change my case to a case with better hdd dampening that It wont be so loud.
