hello all, i wanted to buy a new pc for gaming (hardcore gaming), i am a console gamer and i think that i've been missing alot, here are the specs for the pc i am planning to buy:

CPU: Intel core 2 Quad Q6600 $255

motherboard: Asus maximus formula special edition $270

VGA: xfx geforce 8800GTX $400

RAM: corsair dominator 2GB $118

please post your suggestions, i am more concerned about the motherboard.

i have an ATX case, a western digital 250GB IDE hard drive, and a dvd burner, so i don't need to buy new ones.

note: all prices are from amazon.com

If you're buying in the US, then you might want to check out http://www.newegg.com ,as they may be cheaper, and will certainley offer better customer service than amazon if anything goes wrong. Personally if I was going to buy a new graphics card now I would wait a few weeks, as the 9800GX2/GTX cards are shortly due to be arriving from nVidia. Asus are quality products, so no issues there, but I would say go for one of the new 45nm quads, as you will definatley see the benefits in terms of reduced power consumption and heat output, if you plan on overclocking that is. Corsair RAM is great stuff, if you can afford it but OCZ and imo GeIL are also worth a look, although people's experiences may vary. Even if you don't buy from newegg, be sure to read people's reviews of the products you are thinking of getting before you buy.

Cheers

thanks for the help, but the 45nm processors are highly priced, i'll be taking your advise on waiting for the 9800GTX.

thanx again :)

another question:

does the asus maximus formula support SLI, i went to asus's website and i just saw a crossfire support??

this might be a stupid question but as you can see i am a newcomer :D

The Asus Maximus Formula only has one IDE channel which may limit your hard drive and DVD performance. For the price of a 500GB SATA hard drive I would definetly pick one up.
