Using a Freezer 64 on a 7800 GT GPU

Okay, has this been done before? and is it viable? will it provide a greater cooling performance over my Zalman VF-900 CU?

it should be better, but might not be as big-an increase as expected coz of the way the card is orientated and the direction of the heatpipes, but in general, ideas like that get my 100% approval :)

Side position that looks like the A64 Cooler is positioned the same way it would be when its fitted to a cpu in a tower system would be agood - as well as ensurintg that you have good air flow to the cooler itself to stop it recirculating warm air.

Well, i've lapped the a**e off of it, using my RAF spec polishing kit, and its absolutely flawless. Mirror finish, even from straight on. I just have to find and figure out a mounting mechanism!

As for ventilation, i have a 120mm fan in front of the GPU, so it'll always be fed cool air. I will post some pics once i get new batteries in my camera.

Ok guys, i went a bit mad last night, and after polishing my Freezer 64 HSF even more with some uber grade polishing gear, i mounted it onto my 7800GT. Lol, it was a bit mind bending and i had to rake about in my spares bins like nobody's business, but i got there in the end.

Here's what she looks like.....

looking good - make sure it has all thw support it can get when u tilt 90 - degs.

The reson to do that is so that liguid in the pipes flows and cools in the right way - as it is set up now the liquid will be at its coolest at the top of the cooler not on the base where it is preferred.

Great job, well done.

Ok:

1. That is seriously awesome!!!

2. There's liquid in the pipes for the freezer 64?

3. Isn't it a bit heavy (wont it break the card)

4. You do know that you cant put any other add-in cards in your pc now

5. What's the temp (idle/load) when a)non-overclocked and b)overclocked?

6. How did you get it to fit on the gpu so nicely?

That's got to be seriously cool.. . .

well, the temps are not so good. i overclocked it to 490( which isnt as good as before, but it was a new install of RivaTuner, and i havent turned off the Must Test button yet) and running BF2 it go to 93c!! Idle is 54c. This also may have something to do with there being no real 120mm hole for the front case fan to suck through, as i havent cut it out yet, and also maybe due to the fact that there may be poor contact.

I dunno. Im tempted to go back to the Zalman VF900CU, but we'll wait and see. If i can find some half decent fixings when im next offshore, i can maybe get it held on more firmly. I mean, its firm now, but not as firm as you'd like, know what i mean>?

And yes, there is liquid in Heat Pipes. CPC has a good article on that stuff this month. Apparantly theres liquid and a Wick. The wick conducts the condensed liquid back to the heat source, once its ben vapourised by the heat.

I used a combination of the fixings from the Zalman VF900-CU, and a back plate from an old Arctic Cooler from a 6800 NU i used to have (from Don Vercetti of all people).

Also, i'm aware that i cant use any other expansion cards. It doesnt matter, as Mrs Skull is expecting our first child in february, and my PC budget just went south quicker than a teenagers jaw at a Girls Aloud concert.8)

Any suggestions? (i have 5 120mm fans arriving soon too, so that'll help things no end.)

And thanks for the compliments guys, it means a lot coming from you guys. :$

Hope everything goes well in Feb and LOL @ Girls Aloud!

93 load aint good tho I reckon ya already knew that  From what you`re saying, hopefully airflow and a double-check of the contact/mounting will bring temps right back down.

I reckon ya should post that on XS...doesnt matter if its working 100% yet, its suitably Xtreme :D

Okay guys. This may sound mad, or perhaps not, given my recent shennanigans. But here's what i want. Im out here on a lovely big Oil Rig in the North Sea, with lots and lots of engineering type supplies and tools and facilities all around me. I want to make a back plate to go behind the GPU and to mirror the clamping action of the plate i have holding down my Freezer 64 on the 7800. Just now, i have some odds and ends holding it on, and its not ideal, so im going to source some suitable bolts and nuts, and hopefully make a backplate too. This will be used in conjunction with some custom cut rubber.

So, what i need is some measurements for a 7800GT 256. My model was an early one, 400mhz core. Leadtek GT TDH thing. I dunno if that makes any difference. I just need someone to tell me the distance between each corner of the square that is drawn on the back of th PCB, so i can match that onto a bit of metal and drill some holes.

Hopefully this will allow me to compensate for any distortion created by attaching this hefty doodaa to the card.

Any help would be greatly accepted. Thanks:)

Even if someone could supply me with a lifesize picture i could download and print off (complete with dimensions for callibration), then i could use it as a Template. :)

OOOh - I work as a safety engineer and helped design soem oil-rigs out there (In the north sea like, now everythings moving to the middle east and we have to take terrorist attacks into account when designing pipelines - its stupid) Which rig are you on?

the 7800 series mounting holes form a neat 54mm sided square :)

The square marked out is a square of side 61mm

Hope this helps

Im on the Brent Charlie. lol, the worst they have to worry about is me attacking the Galley :P

K404, thanks, thats invaluable. I will be attempting something tonight, if possible.

Will keep you posted.

It is!!! Wow, i love that pic of the Rig in the massive waves!! Makes me seem hard! :P. .I will have a merry christmas. Lol, im still trying to find the workshop so i can make my back plate for the GPU. I think im going to make a pair of plates out of 3-5 mm steel to give a good squeeze.

Thanks for noticing the madness! lol.

Im not too bothered about a sound card, well, not yet anyway. I can fully recommend the Zalman VF900-CU. It cooled this card @500/1150 to 43* underload. its also very quiet and has a fully polished contact surface.
