Hi guys. Ok, my current rig is:

Motherboard: Gigabyte B75M-D3H
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 G2 (total overkill but i got it on a sweet deal :)
GPU: 2x Geforce GTX 660 SLI 2GB DDR5 (don't even ask me how i managed to make a SLI system on a non SLI board, but i did, and it works fine !)
CPU: intel i7 3770 (non K) 3.4 GHz
RAM: 8GB
SDD: 64 GB (only OS on it) HDD: 1 TB
OS: Windows 8.1 64bit
Monitor: LG D2542, 24" + passive 3d
Audio: Logitech Z506 5.1, & Headphones: Razer Kraken 7.1

I am planning to get a GTX 980ti or GTX 980 (probably the TI tho as it is incredible IMO), and put in a couple of more 4GB DDR3-1600mhz 240pin ram chips. Im also looking forward to get a 4K monitor in a few months, when prices drop slightly. Please, please, please don't change the subject to my preferences about the upgrading components or to advise me to consider AMD, I really don't want to start a fanboy war, or some GPU comparison thread.

As I am not a very sure about this, but believe I checked the compatibility and couldn't find a reason to believe it won't take it, I'd like to ask you guys.

Do you see any incompatibility of the current machine (MOBO, CPU) and the components I'm planning to get for Christmas (GPU, RAM), or would you give me the green light, to upgrade ?

980 = complete waste of money. It fits in nowhere.

980ti on that monitor = complete waste of money. It's a 4k card.

If you're dead set on Nvidia you're probably better off with the 970. In fact I would consider a better monitor and 970 instead of buying the TI.
 
My exact idea is to set it up for when 4k monitors drop a little in price (I don't think it would be too long before that happens), that's why I'd like to get the 980ti. So yes, I'd like to be 4K prepared, and 970 won't give me too much of a push in that direction.

Thanks for the opinion and advice, but please keep on topic as I need info for the components compatibility, not about the 980ti or 980 or 970 on their own, there are more than enough articles concerned with this :)

To make my question more straight: Can the described components work together at all, or have I missed something cruicial?

A 980ti won't make you 4k prepared. You would need at least two 980tis for 4k dude.

I run 4k and trust me, one 980ti is barely enough to get playable framerates at medium-high settings in most of the new games. It won't be until Pascal that we have a true single card 4k solution.

Not sure whether any of it will work in that motherboard you have. If you can read reviews then surely you can read Google yes?

From reading your opening post and reaction to my suggestions it would seem to me that you've made your mind up and just want your ego rubbed a little.

In which case you shouldn't have asked for opinions.

As I said, I did read the specs of the Mobo, CPU and GPU and RAM, and IMO they should run together, but as I am not a hardware pro like most of you guys I'd like somebody with more experience to tell me if that's true. That's all I ask for!

I don't wan't to offend anybody and I don't see why you are attacking me but whatever... thanks for your time and sorry if you were offended by something... damn ppl are touchy. I ask a simple question and would like a simple answer - can the crap i described above work together or no ?!? It's a yes/no answer, and maybe an explenation of the "No" possibility. No ego's rubbed, and no fanboy wars please... ffs. It's just annoying that every time I ask something, the topic gets carried away to my own preferences and how they are not correct or elitist like for example yours, and no one cares about the asked question... that's not helping anyone, and the only ego that gets rubbed is yours.

Yes I have made up my mind, that's why I never asked for an opinion about the upgrade, but about the compatibility. Like actual, hardware compatibility of components, not of user preferences.

Any board that is Crossfire certified also supports SLI, so twin Nvidia cards will be fine. As above, if you want to game at 4k with good framerates and all the eye candy turned up (and who wouldn't?) then you'll need a pair of 980Tis in SLI.

All the kit in your current rig will let you run a 980Ti just fine. The only part I'm not sure about is the passive 3D side of your monitor - I though Nvidias 3D system used active glasses but I may well be wrong on that score.

Any board with more than one physical PCIE slot works with Crossfire. SLI needs to be paid for via a license.

That's unless Nvidia have changed that recently (I doubt it). This is why most full ATX budget boards support Crossfire but not SLI (well that and that CFX works in X4 and SLI does not).

Nvidia supported Passive 3D many years ago by ways of a Zalman and Acer passive 3d monitor. Only the two were ever officially supported. However, you can install an EDID override and it tells the drivers you have a Zalman or Acer. YMMV but it worked fine for me on my old LG.

I wouldn't be surprised though if that will get the chop along with Physx on older PPUs. Nvidia have discontinued support for the 5 series now so you can't for example use a 980ti with a 560ti as a Physx card.

It's sounding more and more like Nvidia are about to ditch Physx and 3D for good.

Thanks mate, now that's what I was looking for. Yeah the Monitor is going to be changed soon so don't worry about that.I used to play in 3D with another 3rd party software (TriDef), not with Nvidias 3d vision, but I guess 3d gaming support kinda died (Other than VRs and stuff), so I'll just be looking forward to UHD for now. Hmm I do understand that the 980ti won't be enough for this, but at least it's a start, and 970 just isn't :)

If you used Google more you could have used Nvidia's proper 3Dvision instead of Tridef.

As for whether a 980ti will work in your rig? as I said to you before, only you or some one else with your hardware can tell you that.

There were a few 1155 Gigabyte boards with 9xx series issues where all you got was a black screen.

So as I said I suggest you start Googling all of your part numbers +980ti.

I stand corrected.

That board is not SLI certified so will only support one 980Ti. If you go for two Nvidia cards it will involve a new motherboard.

Dude, wtf is your problem with me? I did use both google and 3dVision, and with my crappy GPUs and Monitor, I'm telling you TriDef was better. Again you want to take it offtopic, i guess it's your fetish but here's why. In order to run the 3dVision I had to install some crappy cracked Monitor drivers to lie Nvidia that the monitor was supported, which often lead to crashes. Not only that but for unknown reasons for me, 3dVision was a lot more demanding than TriDef, and FPS was a lot lower, while the 3D quality was pretty much the same. TriDef had excellent support up to a couple of years ago, so many people with passive 3D preffered it.

And as far as the SLI is concerned, I have no idea about how it is in general, but in my case the MOBO supported Xfire and didn't want to natively support SLI. So again I used some driver editing thingie called DifferentSLI, which is still supported, and works with the latest driver. Basically it allowed my system to take advantage of the SLI.
The only way around it used to be HyperSLI/DifferentSLI but neither work any more and have not been updated in ages.

Yes HyperSLI is outdated, but Different SLI still works with the latest drivers, so you are simply wrong about this.

Either way I won't do another SLI on this MOBO especially with 980ti, so that wasn;t my point. Would you just please go troll some other topic, and let ppl who have something relevant to say, to do so...

lmao. You obviously didn't look very hard, did you? I have a 4k rig running 4k with a 5820k OC to 4.6ghz with a Fury X and 16gb DDR4.



However, I also have a Titan Black under an AIO with a 8 core 16 thread Xeon in a X79 UD3 with 16gb DDR3. This runs 1080p on a 27" 3D monitor.



And then, just to top it all off nicely I have a AMD 1055T @ 3.7ghz with an Asus Mars 760 and 8gb ram. This will be running Fallout 4 on my 65" TV @ 1080p



So, without being aggressive (like you) and throwing out insults (like you) and putting things in bold so that I get attention (like you) it's quite clear that I'm not a fanboy, nor a troll, nor some one offering you bad advice.

On the contrary your first post absolutely smacks of Fanboy. "Don't you even mention AMD blah blah waffle drone"

So as I said before you come across as extremely arrogant. IE - you are going to do what you are going to do no matter what and you are not here for advice because any questions you asked are all easily answered by Google.

And as it seems there shouldn't be a problem with the mobo GPU etc I will go through with the upgrade. So case closed.
