upgrade now or wait?

Hey everyone,

For the past month and a half I have been wanting to upgrade my pc. I have had the old q6600 in my pc well since it first came out and man have I enjoyed this proc.

I know anything I go to will be an upgrade but I am debating if I should upgrade to a 2500k, 2600k or wait till the lower end SB-E comes out the X series is just to much. Or just wait till ivy bridge comes out.

I always plan on running a dedicated GPU so I could go to the the SB-E and not care about the GPU on the cpu.

I do light overclocking, I am not hardcore at all just for fun and when I feel like it.

What do you all think would be the best route for me to take?

I do plan on keeping this pc for another 2, 3 or even 4 years.

Thanks!

I think any of those choices would be good. IB isnt tested yet, so we dont know how it will do. However, we do know it will have lower TDP then SB, and the chipsets will have pcie 3.0 and lightpeak(rumoured).

For most people, the 2500k/2600k is good enough. Especially if your a gamer. If you do alot of demanding things on your pc, then the SB-E is a stunner, but a bit expencive. Im getting the SB-E myself

Recomend you to watch some reviews of the SB-E and keep in mind that IB is out in April 2012.

SB-E is a nice platform, but you need to do more than gaming to make use of it, or be a freak (not in a negative sense).

SB is nice, and you won't go wrong with it.

As Azurite mentioned, we do not know exactly what IB will give us, although we do know quite a lot. It is a shrink of SB, so a good platform already, slightly optimized logic, shrink will reduce power consumption and allow for higher clocks (= more efficient, less heat, more silent if that is important for you). It will improve the on-chip GPU, while this is not important for most of us here, i reckon it's still a nice backup solution should your GPU fail for some reason.

The Q6600 is still not performing too bad at all (i know it, have one myself

), so i'd say waiting for IB will not be too hard. At least that's what i'll do. And IB (well, SB aswell) will give you lots of potential for more aggressive OC _later_.

My 2 cents.

Azurite,

What SB-E are you going with? 3960X, 3930X or 3820.

Does the SB-E support pcie 3.0?

What is lightpeak?

Im getting the SB-E 3930K. The SB-E have pcie 3.0 on all of the MB's i have seen. Lightpeak or aka thunderbolt is devices with fiberoptical cables(i think) that transfer data really fast. I believe it is said to be 5-10 times quicker then todays usb 3.0.

I also have the 2500k in my lanrig, and im really happy with it. So whatever you chose to get, im sure you will be very pleased. So hard to decide when you got so many great options

Well now that you say thunderbolt I know exactly what your talking about. Are there any mobo's out there with the thunderbolt port on them?

Will what I am really waiting for is to see how the 3930 and the new IB cpus go up against each other. I am also considering the 3820, I guess I must be patient... So hard when I want it now

Yeah. I know how it is. Wait for IB and see how it does. 3-4 months goes fast
