Hello guys

Ive just bought my long awaited upgrade and im now gutted. I bought a I7 950, asus rampage extreme 2, and 6GB of mushkin pc16000 2000mhz. I bought the mobo from this link http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-319-AS&tool=5. In the memory section it states 2000mhz ram but when i revieved the product in the book it only goes up to 1800mhz.
sad.gif
I built the system anyway hoping the memory would downgrade by itself but the pc wouldnt boot. The case, mobo and Gpu all power up and run with no beeps but no on screen action happens. Is this a memory out of range problem? The reason im unsure is the fact the pc will not power down with 1 touch of the power button, so is it making it to windows? Im gonna send it back and buy http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Comp...4+Redline+Ridgeback+-+998970+?productId=42727 if this is the problem. Thanks for the help in advance.

You got a working graphics card in your rig? Try to test if the problem is caused by your graphics card.

Bios update first, then prepare for headaches. The X58 platform's memory settings made my head spin for about two hours today.

It's all linked somehow.

Yeah ive got a asus 5850 EAH, 3 months old with no probs what so ever. Do u think the memory should work in this board then?

Yep I think it should. I think there are POST status LEDs on the Rampage II. Check what they tell you. You may want to try the MemOK button aswell (if there is one on the Ramoage II?). It will set your memory to a very basic setting so it will (hopefully) post. Try using each one of the ram sticks seperatly in the first memory slot aswell.

EDIT: Well and try the suggestions from AlienALX

How do u update the bios when u cant even get the pc to boot? I dont dont have to much experiance with bios apart from basic overclocking

The lcd poster says locked. I`ll try the different memory sticks now

so it wont even boot from a clear cmos? Just into bios?

Asus boards have an overclocking Util built into the bios. So all you need is a memory stick with the bios on and you can do it there (EZ flash).

No i hasnt booted to my knowlage. I would have said it looked like a GPU prob because it seems to boot but nothing comes on screen. Ive cleared the cmos. Do u also think that 2000mhz ram should work in a board that states 1800mhz is the highest?

just go into bios load default settings, i have the same mobo and my ram is meant to run at 2000mhz but i lower it to 1600mhz, try the asus overclocking options in the bios and set the ram to run at the speed you want so you can download the latest bios

or use clr cmos then use the oc options

and that mobo can have memory running at 2000+mhz ive had my ram at 2100mhz and i could probably push it further

Yup and exactly the same thing happened to me today, oddly. And I was setting up an X58 system too.

OK. Here is what caused mine. I hope this might be of help to you.

Firstly as stated there is no such thing as 1600mhz ram or 2000mhz ram in a bios. To reach those speeds you MUST overclock the ram and set everything manually. For me it was like this.

1600mhz rated ram. Timings of 9-9-9-24 @ 1.5v.

If I cleared my cmos and booted the PC I could get into bios. However, even just saving and exiting my PC would offer no display on reboot. Why? because my motherboard was treating my ram as a bad overclock (which in essence it was) and therefore refusing to post. So, what I had to do was the following.

Clear CMOS

Go into setup.

Load optimised defaults (for some obscure reason if I didn't do this it didn't matter squat how well I set it all up as the reboot would blank screen me again until a CMOS reset).

After loading optimised defaults find the 'system turbo' tab. Not the CPU turbo one. It may be called something different in yours but in mine it opens up the ram options fully, including the voltage. See, mine was set to auto. My motherboard was auto setting me at -

6-6-6-15 @ 1.7v @ 1067mhz. Which as you can see is absolutely nothing like 9-9-9-24 @ 1.5v @ 1600mhz. I then had to turn everything to manual and put in the voltage at 1.5. However, for some reason my board didn't like that too much either and kept putting itself back to 1.6 at least. So, after three attempts of doing the above I finally got the voltage in and saved, the timings in and saved and the T setting correct. Then, and only then, I could boot into Windows and see that everything was present and correct.

But as I said (might've been in my build log) these boards DO NOT automatically detect ram settings correctly, and, if you have fast ram that is 'out of spec' and you don't set it up? expect bad news. Even after mine was all set up perfectly and purring along like a kitten I still got the odd failed boot with the message "Warning : post halt due to bad overclock". Thankfully I think that was being caused by me leaving my USB stick in as it hasn't happened since I removed it and I must have cold booted about 20 times now. But aye, these X58 boards are f***ers to get working if you have no experience with them.

QPI volts up to 1.525 and then you should get 2000 fine, any other issues and its your overclock. It will need to be set up correctly. See any of the MANY threads on 950 4ghz overclocks, just follow them.

Job done all other posters take note fgs

*scribbles on his note pad*

Mind you, where's the fun in that.. I simply must pester uncle Tom when the time comes to shove this 950 through the speed barrier

Only joking. After the terror filled two hour blank screen booting session today I'm leaving well alone for a while

I can't keep fiddling because I need to make sure this bugger is stable so I can sell off the Silver Alienware. I have a GPU that needs some coolin' love

I should remove my head from the brown place and get the overclocking video done so I can just post with this next time

Right i must be really bad at explaining myself. The pc has never posted, ive never seen the bios or the mobo screen and im not trying to overclock. Its just a noob hardwear question, The mobo user guide says supported memory is 1066,1333,1600 and 1800 (O.C) I have bought this Mushkin 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000 8-10-8-27 Radioactive - 998966 . Is this the reason the pc wont post
