Ultra's To Be Few and Far Between?

Yanked project. I wouldn`t touch em, if I were that desperate to bid for them, I`d hang out for a 8800 XXXXXX or 8850 or 8900 or 8950-ULTRA-eXtreme-1G-with built in sound or summit.

U`r righ tho, some plank will pay $1000 right now for 1, easy.

Probably to give a "reason" for the incredibly rediculous price id say. Like the 7800GTX EE or something. Or like the 6800ultra EE and all that bull.

If you mention "rare" chances are people are going to want one just to have and say "Oh I have a very rare 8800 ultra" or some bs, still i would want one though just to say i have a over priced card that you cant get.

Why are they going to be so rare?

Whats the point?
Afaik these cards are being rushed out to go head to head with R600. If, in the event that R600 flogs it to death I'd imagine Nvidia would perhaps only make a limited run as an economic measure. Then they can set their sights on the 8900 perhaps...who knows Nvidias logic? Just a thought

Sounds logical! ;)

Just thinking here, but it might be a binning issue, it maybe that only .1% of cores can be binned as Ultras, assuming that is what they are doing. I can't see it being a new die if they are going to produce so few.

As we know, nVidia are releasing this to compete with the r600. It may only be an 8800 with some uber cooling and higher clocks, but if it is enough to beat the r600 then nVidia retain the performance crown.

If they retain the performance crown then the concensus in the community will be nVidia pwn. If people think nVidia are the best then sales accross their whole range will be strong as 'nVidia pwn y'know' - regardless of the fact that the average joe will be able to a hold of the ultra limited card...

'Nvidia is looking to get a 15-20% increase in benches over the GTX.' ati's 2900 (or w/e the real name for it is now) is probably still faster. people might have forgotten there are no drivers for it :O

well nvidia have to do something r600 is planned with 320 stream processes :O thats more than double the 128 the 8800GTX has

I reserve judgement on the R600 until at least some reviews are released. IMHO though I can't see the R600 beating the 8800 by much, I can see it playing out a lot like the 7800-1800 thing. 1800 comes out faster than 7800, super extreme edition is released to keep performance lead and then die shrink 7900 comes out with better performance. The die shrink R600 (or 650 or whatever it's called) could fit into this model like the 1900 did. Taking the lead by a small margin.

Just my 2 cents.
